I have suddenly come into possession of a couple boxes of some 150 grain Nosler Ballistic tips, the boxes hold 100 bullets so that must date them some. Are these the super soft ones?

I have 4 boxes of these I picked up a while ago. Have not gotten to them yet. Was also concerned they may be soft but figured they would be great for practice. Will stay tuned to see what those that have used them chip in with.

Stuff your 270 full of RL22 and take those 150BTs hunting.

Section one the old style had a tapered jacket that went to a base similar to the old solid based bullets. These were much closer to standard cup and core bullets than the current ones. The newer or game style has a compound taper much thicker and a much thicker base. The lead portion is more elliptical in shape. Either way even the old style was more heavily jacketed than the 130s. I would not hesitate to use these on deer and then use the new style or Accubond for heavier game.
+2 on R26 if your starting from scratch.

I keep hearing about RL26 in the 270. I mostly shoot 140 BT's and 140 Accubonds. What load and speeds are you guys getting?

In the 100rnd boxes chances are they're the soft ones. Use them on anything smaller than antelope. I know this..........

Well I happen to have some R22 on hand and it looks like I can get near 2900 fps with it which is still 200 fps more than I actually need for my under 150 yard shooting. I may use some IMR 4320 and push em to 2600 fps for my specific use.

Well sort of, I do a lot of feral hog control hunting at night and really don't want exits much just lots of tissue damage. When I am hunting for fun I use 150 grain Partitions out of my 308 which work really well.

RL-26 seems to be directed towards overbore cartridges and heavy-ish bullets. Alliant doesn't have any load data for anything under 150gr in the 270. Of course, that won't stop the rifle loonies...............

I haven't finished experimenting but I got high velocities with 130 grain mono's. E.G.- 3230 fps with the cutting edge 130 gr mth bullet from a 22" barrel. I will double check this.

It's worked great for 280AI 160+ grain bullets, 150's in my 270 and 100 's in my 243's.

I miss the old 100 count 165 grain 308 ones. I bought all in stock when lgs closed. Still have a couple boxes, and ration them. These in the 308 are the best l have ever killed deer with. Very good results on game, quick kills, no excessive meat loss. 150gr slows the 270 down some. If you avoid the R26 max loads, these should make you happy on deer and pigs.

60.4gr of RL26 gives 3037fps in my Vanguard with 24" barrel. used 150gr Partition with 215M primer Win cases at 3.340OAL Norma MRP was a little more accurate, but right at 3000 fps. Best load for 140gr Accubonds was RL23 about 3050fps. RL26 will get you over 3100fps but slightly less accurate.

I'm going to burn up the can of RL22 I have first. I can get around 2900 fps with it. I will before next hunting season have a worked up load using the 150 Partition and RL26.

Could be, but hard to say. They only made the ballistic bombs one year, think it was around 84. They redesigned them the next year, and not long after that, went to the 50 piece boxes. For a while they sold both the old Solid Base and the Ballistic tips, but I think it was the year they switched to the 50 round box they also discontinued the old Solid Base bullets. If it was me, I'd shoot a couple into some water jugs to see if they are the newer ballistic tips, or the first year ballistic bombs.

I shot a slug of deer with that 150g bullet, they are NOT explosive bullets. I killed two elk with them and a slug of deer. I shot one 240 lb bucks in Alabama at a distance of 10 yards that broke a front shoulder and exited his left Ham, really nice 12 point.
In those days, I shot R#22 or just about the equal of IMR 7828.
Today, I shoot R#26 with a fed 215 primer.
Get ready for a shock when it comes to speed with accuracy.
