I have been thinking of taking my 340 Wby on my elk hunt since I rarely have opportunity to use it. Currently sighted in with 250 Bergers at 3010 fps. Any experience killing anything with this bullet? I am expecting shots to be 300-600 yard range based on where I plan to hunt. Just hoping that I don't need to sight it in with something else.

Up the ante and tote the .458 with open sights. It's 1 for 1.

I thought about that but it is too heavy to tote that far into the wilderness!

A 7 pound 340 Wby shooting full power 250 grain loads sounds so much more fun to shoot.

Dennis - Over in the Pelonas, that Berger in my .338 Win Mag (surely at less MV than your Weatherby) dropped a big bull with one to heart/lung area - made it to opp leg joint. About 250 yards (Not big on measuring or such notes). Bull took about two steps.
The packing out was not fun that time.

Thanks Strick- I am hampered by a 1-12" twist so not every bullet shoots good in this rifle. The 250 OTMs are decent. Probably shoot quite a bit better at elk elevations than they do at home where it is only 1300'.

Hey, have you ever considered getting a 6.5 x 284? Have heard they work.

I have shot 3 bulls with the Berger 250’s. 2 with the hunting bullets and one with the otm’s. I ran out of the hunting and couldn’t buy any more at the time. These were in a browning win mag loaded to 2825 because is has a very long throat and I’m using 375 H&H magazines. The otm’s seemed harder and didn’t leave near as big a exit hole but he was just as dead. I did some piss poor shooting on him and shot through all four quarters so I think the harder bullet was a blessing in disguise.

Just noticed the date on your original post and assume your hunt is over. What kind of luck did you have?

I killed a 6x6 albeit with my 6.5-284. Couldn't get the OTMs to shoot in my WBY.
There is a thread in elk hunting about useing 143 ELD-X on elk.
