Following a successful backpack elk hunt last month I headed out with my brother for perhaps my favorite hunt of all, Coues deer. The weather was unseasonably warm as we packed into our honeyhole... Were able to set up a comfortable camp in the oaks. The streams were not flowing like last year though. Opening morning was clear and mild as we started glassing. I spotted a herd of 6 bachelor bucks working our way about an hour after sunup. After watching them for a few minutes I decided not to hesitate on the largest one. My trusty 6.5-06 did fine even with with it's Leupold scope and blue tape! Back to town with that buck and back the next day to continue the hunt. My brother tagged a small buck to finish things up. Really enjoyed the view from the hammock! And the flock of Goulds turkeys wandering the area. can't wait for next year...

Great job Mike - nice buck!
That sycamore looks familiar to last year's...

MikeS: I too love hunting the little coues deer. Just got back from this year's hunt. Someone please tell me why this appears sideways. It's not sideways in the image gallery. How can I correct it? Saturday Sunrise. KC

I hauled out the meat on Sunday morning and returned to get my camp that afternoon. It was 89°F. Fortunately I had some cerveza XX in the cooler.
No turkeys where we hunted and no streams. Just some springs.
I think your buck is a little bigger than mine. But both are good looking animals.

Our trip was a fairly easy backpack. We only went in about three miles, and although the terrain is tough (no trails), we don't have to carry any cold weather gear. It was hot this year. Last year it was cooler and it rained during two consecutive nights. Here's our camp. We do have to haul water up from the springs. KC

MikeS:
I just looked back on this thread and I realise that I owe you an apology. I hijacked your thread. I apologise. I'll start my own next time.
