Went and picked up a new (to me) savage 110 yesterday. Turned out to be a serious odd ball

First thing I noticed was the receiver has a really weird cut out near the lugs

Second is that the bases aren't screwed on. they are brazed on

After some head scratching and some googling, it looks like this was an experiment savage did in the late 80s-early 90s. I've only been able to find 1 or 2 other examples on the internet of these oddballs

The good thing is that the relief cut doesn't expose any more of the bolt then a normal 110, and the far side, that isn't shown here, actually has MORE meat on it than a normal 110.

Any one else have one of these weirdos?

No, but I’d be surprised hearing that Savage actually let something like you described out on the market. It looks to me like there may be other things going on with your 110 too.

I have heard about the integrated (not screwed on) bases on 110s, but not the weird cutouts. This is a long action with 5.05" action screw spacing?

Looks like Ruger picked up on Savages idea for permanent scope mounts. Weatherby has a cutout on their MK V action for unloading the unfired long cartridges don't they?

Roy is on it. back in the stone age we sometimes loaded long cartridges that wouldn't cycle unfired. that specimen looks like the cut was done by hand, not regular enough for a factory cut.
some of the actions we cut like that were used for single shots with extra long loadings, with just a solid follower in the mag.
has the bolt face been opened for a mag sized rim?
still would like to see the bolt head/face.
