Ok I don't HAVE to vent but I want too.
On a recent Elk hunt in Alpine AZ, I was talking to a shop owner who said two elk's were taken on her street. In her neighborhood. The shots were so close her ears were ringing. She called G&F but the "hunters" was able to load 1 and a half elk before fleeing. They left half an elk behind.
I was told ... you know when you are hunting and you stop by the local town and ask "Hey where are all the elk?" Well I guess some of the locals said "right there go shoot them." Well it would not have been that individuals fault had that "hunter" missed and hit a kid or baby. We have a 1/4 mile from the nearest occupied building rule in AZ. And they chose to ignore it just to bag an elk.
I was wondering why not one but two G&F officers told me to remember my distance and we had so many G&F in the unit. My elk was shot over 10 miles from any building.
I get it, it can be frustrating. Working hard to find these animals just to see them, almost flaunting themselves, in front of you in the middle of town. But its actions like this that hurt hunting in general.
Ok
I'm done

Ha Yen It is sad behavior like this that becomes a black eye for all ethical hunters in the public's eye. I hope the unethical meat hunters are caught by LE officers. HH

I share your frustration with poachers, but the chance of someone shooting at an animal and hitting a "kid or baby" instead is about zero. We can condemn unethical hunting practices without pretending children are going to die because of them.

HaYen,
There will always be the guy that will do anything for an animal. Their common sense fades away in the excitement of seeing one.
A father took his son on a coues wt junior hunt unit 33 earlier this fall.. On the last day a buck walked through the Peppersauce campground and the father told the son to shoot it. An Az game and fish officer told me the story. Said the Forest Service is involved as the shooting was done in their campground. The father should be cited for such a stupid act.

In the 1970's I spent a little time there. It seemed like the Indians pretty much did whatever they wanted. Maybe they still do.

There are signs as you enter Alpine from all three directions that state clearly that the Alpine valley is closed to firearms hunting. That's pretty egregious to shoot them by someone's house- especially without permission. In this case, you cannot even get permission since the whole valley is posted closed by the state. Idiots.

Was this town hunting/shooting on the ‘rez’ by chance? I’ve seen that in the Midwest, nature of the beast.

Back in 2003 they had an issue with USO and a client if I remember correctly with shooting in town. After that those signs went up. Those bulls are always in town. Very tempting for some.

who put up the signs? Are they official, legal signs or did some residents put them up hoping to chase off hunters? There's a housing area near Sun Valley, ID with a trail leading to public land with a good elk population. There's a sign that says the trail is closed to hunters. For anyone else, it's ok. Needless to say, it wasn't put there by the IDFG.

G&F,did. Those big bulls stay close to private property and the forest boundary, which is close to town.
