I'll just leave this bit of history here. If you buy it, don't drill and tap it. http://www.gunbroker.com/item/717492872

No sorry,, but it's not.
I have the same stamps. They were made some years ago by a man in Montana as exact copies of the real ones. I use them too but when I make a recreation of a Hawken I always put my marks on it so this kind of thing can't happen.
The gun from the link is not a genuine Hawken and it was probably made in the early 1980s or late 1970s.

yeah the "providence" on it leaves me a little leery of making a starting bid! there is no way the Patina is from the 1840's

I saw that a few days ago and thought it looked a little too dressed up and too clean for a rifle that could be nearly 200-years old.

Humm, buy a house or a Hawkin. Honey can I get a new gun? Yeah, no foolin' The rich are different and I don't think they go to places like GB to buy their muzzle loaders.

I have seen two S. Hawkin rifles in the Smithsonian in D.C. Not even close Sam Hawkins father had a gunsmith shop in Hagerstown. Maryland before relocating to St. Louis.

http://americansocietyofarmscollectors.org/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/B039_Reisner.pdfMr. Reisner had about a dozen or so of these on display at the Texas Gun Collectors Assn show in Dallas about 1983 or 84. Very nice man and very nice rifles!

So I have to ask this. If the seller thinks he has the real deal then why doesn't he go to a high en auction house to sell it? Again, GB is kind of the shopping mall of firearms and I wouldn't expect to find the Hope Diamond at Sears. Selling any authentic Hawken on GB just seems dumb or suspicious to me.
