I just picked up a NIB Model Seven in .223. SS and synthetic stock. Barrel code says it was made in April 1997 (CR).
Just wondering, since I'm not much of a Remington guy, what you can tell me about them?
I've noticed a few things: First, it has only three scope base holes unlike newer models I looked at. When did they add the second hole to the rear bridge? I'll probably D&T a second hole on the rear bridge so I can run two piece bases.
Twist rate is 12" unlike the newer production at 9". I'd have preferred a 9" twist but 12" will do all I need for what I intend to use the rifle for.
I like the stock a lot better than the synthetics on the newer production rifles. It has a pebble like finish and no checkering. I like the feel and looks better and it seems more rigid.

Can't answer your questions about dates of 3 vs 4 hole but I have a 260 & 308 SS 3 hole scope base rifles . Both shoot and function very well , above average triggers too , easy to load for .
Good luck ..

Thanks. I assume you are using one piece bases?
The shop I got it from had a .308 as well, and a .300 SAUM. The .308 and .223 came from the same guy, both unfired in the box. If the .308 had been a .260 I might have gotten it instead. I can use another .223 more than another .308 so I got it. Plus, it was $250 less.

308 has leupold one piece .
260 has talley lightweights , cleaned the receiver with alcohol put a drop of 10110 steel putty bedding material to act as a second screw . Hasn't moved in 100+ shots launching 140 speer hotcores . Thinking about having a local smith drill a couple of base holes.

Thanks. Oddly enough, I've build hundreds of custom rifles and never think twice about modifying them, but I pause at the idea of drilling one little hole in this one, lol.
I already ordered the Talley lightweights, so I'm committed.

Don't worry about the extra hole just shoot it. Talley 2 piece seem to work fine on the 3 hole receivers. My 7-08 included.
