I'm not an expert on checkering patterns either. I had a DL once with a late 64 serial number with that pattern, so it is entirely possible that I have confused "only year" with "first year".

Somebody else here can prolly tell us all about it.

I think 1966 was first year for the impressed checkering. I prefer the hand checkering, but it is what it is

The 99E's probably kept that pattern longer than the DL's. The E's had a lot of variation.
