Butt stock shell holder? Leather belt holder? Pictures of what you guys like/use would be good. I am looking for ideas. Not exactly pertinent to this forum, but I am wanting something to match the beauty of my 50's 99.

Back in the days of Wool & Plaid, I would carry my extra 99 rounds (usually .300 Sav, but once in a while 250-3000) in a leather carrier (see below), on my belt with a wrapped drag rope & and old (usually Guttman or Edgemark) leather stacked sheath knife. Don't leave rounds in that leatherr carrier offseason... they turn blue.

But, that for me was in the 70's & 80's (still have Duofold underwear, green wool pants and Pendelton shirts from that era....retired). Now, I'm in head to toe camo (Realtree), except for a Orange vest & hat. I usually throw 5 rounds in my left hunting jacket pocket (they go In the gun when I start my hunt), and 2-3 loose/spare rounds in my right pocket (7-8 rounds total). When I'm hunting big areas (Canada, Maine, etc.) i'll throw 1/2 a box (10rounds) extra in my backpack, should I need emergency/signal rounds.

Uncle Mike's makes a nifty and inexpensive black nylon model that slides onto a belt and carries 10 rifle rounds, 5 over 5. It folds up and secures with a Velcro cover. But I've never needed to use it -- ever -- as I rarely use more than 1 round. And if I do need 2, then # 2-3-4 are up next in the gun's magazine.

One in the chamber, the rest in the magazine. Deer shooting for me really hasn't gone much past 2 shots with a Savage M99. I'm fortunate I guess, but when it seems prudent I keep a plastic Federal ammo strip in a pocket to hold a few more. I'll bet that little plastic doohickey Federal puts their ammo into has made them no small fortune in sales simply because guys like to carry their few extra shells in it without them klinking around.

*correction, rifle cartridges, not bullets, haha

1 is usually all that is needed. Last year deer hunting, I decided to take target practice on a running coyote, took 3 shots before I dropped him, and most likely scared off any deer within 500 yards, but always good to be prepared, like a boy scout. I like the leather one on midway.

Another one for a Federal plastic strip in the pocket. Usually. Also found a nylon pouch that holds 5 rounds on the road a couple years ago full of 243 rounds that were squished from being run over, and I'll use that sometimes.

In the magazine, except when using the 22-250 to shoot varmints when I might need extra rounds. Coat pocket bundle of five rounds wrapped with a strong rubber band. GW

Usually just what fits in the rifle. In the past in WV, if you had an extra Doe tag, you had to check your first deer before you could take the second. One deer per day bag limit. Now you can shoot the second deer the same day and check them both at the same time. So, I stick a couple extra rounds in my left pants pocket, Joe.

Steely, love the bandoleer! I'd just be afraid if I walked into some quick sand, I'd go down before I could get off 3 "help me" shots, Joe.

The number of deer that you are planning to shoot might dictate the number of rounds that you need to carry afield.

One full magazine, one spare cartridge in the right vest pocket, and 10 cartridges in the pack is my usual basic load.

Old Heiser belt sleeve. 15 rounds. These 32-40s are a little loose after carrying 30-06s for awhile.

roundoak, I think I like the idea of that leather carrier either in a pack or on hip. I like the flap, extra security from cartridges coming out of loose leather loops. I like leather

Midwayusa used to have some leather cases for carrying cartridges. Might be worth a look (can't do it from work).
