In years past I have used the 375 H&H on deer and elk. Used the 260 gr Partition at 2650 fps.

I also hedged my bets by strapping an LAR Grizzly .45 Win Mag on my side for backup! Anybody else taking their big boomers to the deer woods this season?

Shot a doe with my 50 bmg once. Ran a long ways. Was not impressed with it actually. No damage to meat though, that was nice to see.

What I wish was legal was 22 lr subs... with the right shot it would be easy to kill all my deer with one and QUIET on top of it. Nothing would get shook up.

Smart to use a premium like that.

I've only used 270 gr Hornady Spire Points out of a 375 Ruger and 250 gr Core-lokt out of a 35 Whelen. I've been very lucky they haven't blown up on deer yet. ...the 250 Whelen load resulted in the longest double lung run I've seen.

One of my hunting companions this year took a meat deer with his .308 Lazzeroni. Not only killed it but also gutted it.

I haven't actually killed a deer with the .411 yet but did shoot this old slick-head with a .404 Jeffery a few years ago. A week or so earlier I killed a buck in the same ground blind with a .221 Fireball. The one with the .404 ran 100 yards, the one with the Fireball was DRT....

I've shot several deer and two black bears with the 375 H&H. Two of the deer were shot with 270 gr Core-Lokts with the rest with Federal factory loads using the 300 gr Sierra bullet. All the deer dropped immediately with the bears going maybe 30 yards at the longest.

I shot one deer with a CZ 550 in 416 Rigby and the Fusion line of 400 gr bullets by Federal. It staggered at the hit then wobbled a couple of steps before falling.

Have taken them with .375 H&H and a .416 Rem. Neither was impressive, basically double lunged, ran 50-75 yards and died. Both were with factory ammo. Currently carrying a .45-70 Siamese Mauser shooting 430gr Hard Cast +P factory loads (HSM Bear Load), hope to report on results soon. I can say it is havoc on a feral barn cat.....

I know.

Right now, we're hunting an area that 300 to 400 yard shots are possible and my Forward Observer has the week off.

Jim

I keep hearing these types of stories that I do NOT believe.

To hear folks, I"d have cut my doe in half with the 50 bmg, and she never even showed a sign was hit, and a caliber size in and out hole, ran almost 200 yards... lung shot...

My only elephant gun is a 9.3x62. I haven't used it for deer yet, but probably will at some point. No hurry, though.

I have taken deer with my 45-70 Guide Gun with a 300 grain Hornady hollow point. Couldn't exactly "eat right up to the hole". This year I loaded it with 405 grain Remington SP. Maybe I will take it for a walk tomorrow, just in case I run into one of those escaped Pachyderms.

I shot my buck Monday with the 405 grain Remington. I not only ate up to the hole but ate the hole too.

Before he passed, my uncle hunted the thick pine woods around here w/ 2 diff. rifles. A short barrelled Rem. semi-auto in 30-06 and, mostly, a Win. M70 Safari Express in .375 H&H because he was "practising" (for 40 years) for an Alaska grizzly hunt. Sadly, his health failed before the hunt ever happened, but, with fact. 270gr loads, he could shoot at a fleeing buck from any angle w/ confidence that the bullet would get to where it needed to go. Our whitetails top out at over 300 lbs and some of the expanded bullets he recovered were as big as quarters. I think he used mostly Win. Super-X ammo.

I carried a .458 Winchester Model 70 the first day this season. Never got the chance to use it.
