The man who made the nifty Damascus steel knife with mammoth ivory handle I posted here a while back told me that anything with elephant ivory can be a pain to own or especially sell because of all the regs. You need to be able to prove it's legal any time the gummint sees it. Applies to everything from knives to pianos. He goes to a lot of trade shows with his scrimshaw and has seen stuff siezed. He likes the mammoth ivory because there's no controls and it's nice stuff.
I prefer some sort of ebony, but have read the oil in it can be a pain when glueing it.
What fresh Hell is this?

I use a floating tenon mortised and epoxied into the barrel channel which subtends both the walnut fore end and the ebony tip. That eliminates the dependency on end grain-to-end grain glue joints and guarantees they'll never separate. To get a good bond onto the ebony, always wipe it down with acetone to remove the oily residue. I never had any ebony come loose from anything when that precaution was exercised. Ebony will also take any finish without any particular prep work.

Use Australian Buloke. Guarantee you won't get any forend tip damage. But your stockmaker might kill you
