Best thing you can do for a transmission. Changed gear oil also. Changed coolant. I change coolant by age 3 to 5 years.

Coolant yes, as the protective additives break down over time.

As far as the full tranny flush/change, a lot of mechs disagree.

What does the Tacoma typically get for mileage? Wouldn't mind a Tundra but with such poor mileage it is a no go for me. They honestly should be able to do better than they do.

Fluid change intervals are being driven by a concern of waste, not the life of the vehicle components. Much of it being driven by European regulations.

Can't change your fluids too often, including ATF.

I'd say they can be pretty good. This one has over 1,000,000 miles with all major factory parts. The transmission needed work at 750,000, but was not replaced.

http://www.trucktrend.com/features/1602-the-million-mile-2007-toyota-tundra/

Tundra's may not be as refined as the big 3, they get their power from old school engines and lower axle ratios, and get 1-2 mpg worse fuel mileage than the big 3 American trucks. But I'd bet the lower repair bills over 100,000 miles will more than offset the added fuel costs.

I was looking for a used full size 4X4 truck about 2 years ago. I looked pretty hard at Tundra, but there were simply no used ones available that met all of my criteria. Ended up buying a used 2014 Ford.

Can't kill the tundra, they just keep going.

Would you like to just keep explaining the problem or do you want the solution?

14.5 is what I get around town. Highway is more like 18. 19 if I keep it under 60. On the 80 mph stretches, I'm getting about 16. Pulling the 20' camp trailer it runs around 11. I don't drive like a grandma, but do have some finesse.

Exactly my thoughts and why I bought a 2016 Tundra when I was last in the market for a pickup truck. It hasn't disappointed thus far.

They call that a freak engine. Smooth, quiet and doesn't quit.

I have a 03 with 165K on it. Brakes, shocks, oil changes and 1 battery. Also have a 14 150. Huge difference in build quality. Don't like the new Tundras, bulbous looking and the from what I have heard from owners various mechanical issues as well, so I bought the 150 instead of another Tundra.

2003 4runner with that V8 4.7 engine. Been a great rig and still going strong at 194,000 miles. Nothing but oil and fluid changes. Maybe 1 set of plugs. Like my 5.7 liter Toyota engine a lot too in my Tundra.

Hard to imagine given the truck has changed very little since introduced in 2007.

I had a 150 that was bought back by Ford with 6500 on the ODO , any company that has a truck in the service department for 60 days and has techs flown in from dearborn to figure out the problem(never did) does not need to be selling vehicles ( I am trying to be nice BTW) . I bought a 2017 Tundra , it just turned 10k on it and I had to replace the front passenger Michelin tire and a set of wipers.

Lower fuel costs and higher resale price.

I would change the transmission fluid as part of routine maintenance.

The dealer will likely just drain and fill the pan, which if done frequently is fine. On my tacoma i did a DIY complete flush and will probably just drain and fill the pan every 30k from here on out, i do tow with mine.

The last I knew, Toyota specifically recommended not flushing the 6 speed automatic on the Tundra. Their TSB said to get it up to 115 degrees f, pin open the valve to the cooler, drain completely and refill....do not flush.

^^^^^ This. Service Writer at the dealership recommended a 60 K drain on the tranny.

Isn't a drain and fill of the transmission is considered a 90% refresh?

Look for an 05 or 06 as they have the 5 speed transmission and it’s a stout combo. I have an 06 with 200k Miles onnitvand it’s never missed a beat

My first '06 Tundra with the 4.7 liter V8 had 274,000 miles on it when I hit a huge whitetail deer and totaled it. My present '06 has 185,000 miles and is still running strong. No leaks, still gets 18-20mpg on the highway.
It uses a quart of oil every 3,500-4,000 miles.

Have a 2017 Taco with 16K miles. Traded in my 06 tundra for it last year. Once you get used to the smaller size, it's great. I get 24mpg in the city, but only 22 on the hwy doing 75????
