I am curious what version my 336 is. Serial# 17136XXX. 35REM. It has the cross bolt safety, but a delete kit has been done.

Your rifle is a 336sc The "S" is for safety model added to the 336 in 1984/1985. Many Marlin owners despise the safety, I like having it.

Yes CS for "Carbine Safety". The SC is "Sporting Carbine" with the 2/3 magazine.

It wears walnut so it is of the "RC", "C", "CS" lineage which is all denoting different periods of the same rifle. Had I not been able to tell it was walnut from your picture the "Marlin bullseye" on the bottom of your stock would've gave it away too. The economy models wear Birch and don't have pistol grip caps.

I'm guessing a 1980's vintage by the stock profile. Those made in the 70's and 80's are my favorite. Older, and newer versions tend to be a lot fatter in the forend. Subtract the 1st 2 digits of the SN from 100 to get the year of manufacture. For example if the 1st 2 digits are 15, the gun was made in 1985.

Based on the serial#, it appears mine is an '83. In an earlier post the thought is that Marlin didn't start putting the safeties on 336's until 84/85. Maybe Marlin started putting the CBS on in '83? So mine would be a 1st yaer CBS, I suppose.

I remember 83 being the first year for the safety.
