I got a nice little surprise recently. I found this knife in a thrift store. Some may recognize it as a Cold Steel Master Hunter. This is an early one in Carbon V. The Carbon V ones are getting harder to come by --- They bring $60-$80 used. I got this one for $6.00 ------ but that's not the nice surprise part.
In 2007 this knife, along with 5 firearms and 30+ other items was stolen from our home. It still had the tiny identifying mark that I burned in the rubber handle. Someone had treated it really badly. They tried sharpening it with a coarse file. All they accomplished was to scratch it deeply and ruin the grind. There was also rust (Carbon V is not stainless). I took it home and worked on it for a while --- got the worst scratches out and rust off; there's still more to do. It sharpened wonderfully (as it always did) and hacking a piece of firewood showed that the edge would hold up. I was glad because I was afraid they used a grinder on it.
Glad to have it back. It field dressed my Nephew's first bow-killed Elk 25 miles back in the Bob Marshall in 1991 and some of mine after that --- Good memories!
No, the clerk couldn't recall who donated it.
