The rich liberals will still be flying around in their private jets. They will still have muti million dollar homes. But they will still be telling the common folks what they must do to save the planet. The question is will the normal folks still be listening. Hasbeen

Tesla mod 3 is $35.000 with 220mile range. For a surcharge you get 310 miles.

Now, in 20 years time, the battery technology will be vastly improved... its increasing its efficiency by 8% year over year.
Battery cost are plummeting.. and solar panels produce electricty at 2 cents pr kWh. That now.. its only getting better and better.

Running a electric car, by electricity produced in a Coal plant, is even more efficient then a gasoline powered car.

Electric is the way of the future!!

All these so called non emission vehicles will require lots of mining to obtain the materials for production. Metal mining is the dirtiest and most cost and labor intensive activity compared to oil or natural gas production. Then there's the environmental issues and cleanup of mine sites and tails.

There will have to evolve some serious technology to come online because there's no such thing as a zero emission or zero polluting vehicle. Energy or materials have to be extracted and it comes with a cost and you can't get something from nothing. I know because I've drilled, and mined and folks can't comprehend the process to produce the materials we take for granted.

Again, as I mentioned and Doc discussed, to think of 2040 given what we see today is folly. I am an old retired career oil and gas guy and have watched my former major oil company transform from oil to gas and now increasingly working the non-fossil fuel future. The other majors are doing the same. It will come without question in my mind.

I dont doubt it, but not in 22 years from now. What I think you will see is a move to diesel or gas electric hybrids. Or perhaps a method will be found to scrub CO2 from exhaust gas. There has been alot of work on the power generation side looking at ways to do that and some of the technologies are pretty promising.

If electric cars are indeed the best option, the change to them will happen on its own. You cannot legislate pious intentions - especially so if the idea is unworkable.

When California had power shortages a few years ago. Someone built a huge coal fired plant about 2 miles across the border in northern Mexico to supply power to southern California. Also, Nevada has some coal fired plants providing power to California. If all the cars in 20 years ran on electricity, it would only increase the power needs by about 20%. Or, cars would have to charge during off peak hours. Like at night in summer. Not really a problem, because 80-90% of personal driving is commuting and average less than 45 minutes a day. Long distance would require quick charges, for Tesla every 280 miles for 45 minutes. Tesla's tractor trailer truck will be able to go 500 miles on a charge.

Tesla's model 3 is $35,000, so they are coming down in price. Audi, Volvo, Mercedes, and BMW are soon to deliver electric cars in Germany, later the US. China is going with electrics due to their huge air pollution problem. It will happen on it's own. I think California's law will not ban gas powered cars, but will ban only new cars being sold by 2040. There will still be a lot of gasoline powered cars out there.

The coastal part of California would look better at the bottom of the Pacific. We can only hope the San Andreas does its job.

California gets a lot of its "certified green energy" from hydro dams on the Columbia river in the state of Washington

these green energy dams have destroyed historic salmon and steelhead and sturgeon populations plus it seems the dams also cause global warming

More Kalifornia stupid

By 2040, given the rate of population growth in Idaho, Wasington, and Oregon, there will be no excess power available fron the Columbia/Snake River hydro systems to sell to Cali. Idaho Power is already building gas fired generation to supplement their system. There is a 300 megawatt gas facility a couple miles from my house which ensures the air conditioners in the Boise metro area do not run short of power in July and August.
