Seems that everything I read says that the correct granulations of black powder and Pyrodex are interchangeable; no real performance difference between them. I'm not a re-enactor or a slave to historical accuracy, but I thought real black powder was what I wanted for the Thompson/Center .45 cal Cherokee I purchased. Then I tried to buy some bp and had real trouble finding any for sale in 1-2 lb quantities. What will I lose if I give up and just buy the Pyrodex? One more question...are there major differences between brands of No. 11 percussion caps? Thanks.

About the only thing you will lose is that Pyrodex degrades. BPwon't as long as you keep it dry. I have found very little, if any difference in different brands ob percussion caps
If God wanted you to walk and carry things on your back, He would not have invented stirrups and pack saddles

A quick search turned up Bass Pro and Kenokee Tradin' Post as black powder vendors in Michigan, I'm sure there are more, or order it online.
Keep looking, it is worth the effort.
