Got a few 22’s. Nothing real expensive. Would get them out just to plink once in awhile or hunt. In 1994 I bought a 10/22 at K-Mart. Birch carbine model. No matter what tweek or ammo I tried it was terrible. Finally gave up. Into the cabinet it went only coming out to get wiped down with the rest a few times per year.
Since joining this and other boards and reading about the fine accuracy and mods available I decided to give this one another chance. A quick trip out back reconfirmed the accuracy stunk. So I boxed up the complete action and barrel and set it off the CPC in Connecticut with a check for a little over $200. Requested the “Full Tune Up”. About 3 weeks later it was done and in my hands.
I was not disappointed. A variety of ammo both bulk and midrange target stuff shot 1”(sometime less) at 50 yards. A big improvement but not quite as good as I hoped. Using online instructions I played around with bedding both the carbine stock and a Houge soft rubber overmolded. Some improvement.
Then Cabela’s had a sale on Magpul stocks for 10/22’s. Neat stock and I really liked all the adjustments so home it came. Before putting it together I used aluminum tape to bed the sides and rear of the action (another online tip). The results were incredible! Group shrunk with everything I tried, absolute best with SK Standard Plus. This is what’s pictured, 10 shot groups at 50 yards.
Can’t wait now for better weather and more shooting. Really caught the 22 bug with this project.
