The Shootist... no question.. his last, his best, one that the character personified the actor's life... having cancer and dying, but doing so with what was some sort of dignity to himself.

Watched the Cowboys yesterday.
yep, that is one of my favorites. Very rare to see Wayne get shot and killed in a movie. Really interesting plot.

The Searchers isn't just the best western ever made, it's the best movie ever made. A lot of people say JW never acted, he just played John Wayne in every movie. He acted and was a good actor. He deserved the Academy Award for that role and several others. Then, as now, Hollywood is made up of a bunch of effete snobs who are more political than anything else. I hate The Shootist . What a bunch of bs. JW doesn't commit suicide.

The Searchers and closely followed by The Quiet Man............as best. I was also enthralled by Wake of the Red Witch which just might have been the first movie where he died. I don't think he made any bad movies, just some are better than others.
It might have been "The Fighting Seabees", 1944.

My favorite is The Searchers.......my favorite movie of all. My top 10 John Wayne movies would be as follows..... 1. The Searchers 2. She Wore A Yellow Ribbon 3. The Three Godfathers 4. Shepherd Of The Hills 5. Stagecoach 6. Sands Of Iwo Jima 7. Rio Grande 8. The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance 9. Rio Bravo 10. Hondo
Except I'd give a tie to # 8 with #8B as Fort Apache and get the whole
