The Shootist... no question..

his last, his best, one that the character personified the actor's life...

having cancer and dying, but doing so with what was some sort of dignity to himself.

The Searchers isn't just the best western ever made, it's the best movie ever made. A lot of people say JW never acted, he just played John Wayne in every movie. He acted and was a good actor. He deserved the Academy Award for that role and several others. Then, as now, Hollywood is made up of a bunch of effete snobs who are more political than anything else.

I hate The Shootist. What a bunch of bs. JW doesn't commit suicide.

the only real difference between a good tracker and a bad tracker, is observation. all the same data is present for both. The rest, is understanding what you're seeing.

I don't think he made any bad movies, just some are better than others.

It might have been "The Fighting Seabees", 1944.
