Mothers were putting their children down manholes. Little did they know that toxic gases often accumulate down in those. Fortunately, I haven't heard of any of the kids dying of the fumes.

Ever heard of chlorine gas following a trench system in ww-I? Ever heard of pumping methyl bromide gas to woodchucks in a tobacco plantbed?

Even water heaters are mounted above floor height because explosive gasses are also heavier than air, and sink.

No wonder I have brain damage, as kids, we used to play in the tunnels and retrieve our tennis and baseballs from them.
A majority of our system works through gravity that goes straight to the ocean. Now if there was a heavy storm occuring, people would get swept away.

I used to do a lot of metal detecting...before I knew better, i placed a 24ft ext ladder down into an old cistern that was no longer able to hold water. lol I was going to look for any coins that I was supposing someone might have tossed in. I didn't have any issues luckily, also didn't find any coins either.

norm Had to watch an osha thing once. Water dept worker got over come in a meter pit of an air release valve. In a manhole case btw...firefighter #1 goes down to be the hero...he faints out...firefighter #2 goes down to help. Was a pile of bodies. Was a documented event. Can't remember how many, but it was a pile of bodies quick.

Although not really comparable, they hit the tsunami warning here in town which consists of a guys voice over a loudspeaker telling folks to get to higher ground. Lots of good stories going around about folks freaking out after than one.

Guy who goes in is teathered, and a winch mechanism is set up above the hole, to pull him out if there is need. No heros without self contained air.
