Was asking myself the exact same question for my .308 Featherweight (Xtr). I really wanted to find a nice 6x36, but used ones are commanding a premium. So, I ended up ordering a new VX1 3-9. Looks and fits like it was made for it.

Is your FW 308 a long action? If so do some measurements for mounting a scope. For my Classic FW 30-06 a Leupold 3x9, 3.5x10, 6x36mm, and 6x42mm are the best choices for me but I set my scopes back more than most do.

It is a long action, the 3-9x40 is slid nearly all the way back in Burris signature rings on Weaver bases. Fits with about 1/8" to spare from taper of front tube and provides full eye relief. Any scope without long eye relief would be very difficult to mount without using some goofy front base/ring combination. Whatever scope you choose make sure it has a nice long tube.

I have 3-9 Conquest on my 06 and a 2.5-8 3i on my 7-08. The 3i might not give you as much room to move since it's a shorter tube. I'd stick with the Conquest if i already had it. The Conquest duplex is slightly thicker which may be something you like better (or worse). I got the 3i because i was wanting to keep my 7-08 as light as possible.

I have a 2X7 in Talley lows on my pre-64 308 but it seems to be a mute point in that Falcon plans to send to G&H for their rings to his base. Wouldn't their recommendation or input on ring spacing be in order here?

Joel at G&H didn't mention it when I talked to him about mounting options but it's certainly is worth asking him about, thanks leadminer.
I pulled that M8 4x from the rifle it was on and mocked it's setup on the FW. Proportionately, the objective size and length looked a bit too small, like mathman described it just didn't look right and I want it to have that classic look.
The Conquest is still an option but I have a line on a gloss M8 6x42 in great condition. I think the added length and larger objective might just be the right combination.

Anything better than the Conquest will only be marginally better for the use you describe. You might like or enjoy something else more, but the honest truth is the conquest is for all intents and purposes as good as anything you can get. I agree with you and Ken.
I try to stick with the basics, they do so well. Nothing fancy mind you, just plain jane will get it done with style. You want to see an animal drop right now? Shoot him in the ear hole. BSA MAGA

Okay, I took some scope mock-ups with the M8 4x and 6x and the Zeiss Conquest 3-9 M8 4X... M8 6X... Conquest 3-9... Yeah, I'm thinking the Conquest...
