I think it is safe to say the bear is one of the largest, if not the largest ever taken in MA. A quick check of the B&C book shows NO black bears from your state. The minimum for B&C is 21, so there may be a bear from there between your bear and 21...

But forget all that, you have one dandy bear!!!

Thanx for the replies guys. I'm hoping someone has A P&Y book out there . Can you believe this bear only weighed 290? JUST AS WELL, I had to round up 4 buddies ,and tie him to A ladder to hall him out of A NASTY swamp.

#**OK I 'll give you A short shot. I discovered A 5 3/4 track 4 years back while turkey hunting. When I told A hunting buddie he said I should trie to take him cause he is probably A book bear .I scouted all summer and found A few marking trees and a tree that had to be his favorite back scratcher,All in A thicket edge of A NASTY THICK SWAMP. You cant bait or hunt whith dogs in MA. so I tried A fawn bleat. the first night I called in A doe and A nice velvet racked 7 pointer ," That was A thrill in it'self" rite at dark. The next day I went in toward the swamp A little deeper and found A perfect tree for my climber. I wasn't calling more than 20min. when I heard A SNAP. behind me.I couldn't believe A BEAR WAS LOOKING FOR ME!! He came out of the skunk cabbage and circled in front of me at about 50 yrds.I couldn't see him in front of me anymore because of the thick brush .My heart sank a little as I figured no one will beleive I called in A BEAR. As I was trying to control my mixed emotions I noticed A bush shake in front of me 25yds out 15, 5, HOLY S*#@T he is strait down under my stand sniffing my boot prints! I stuck him between the shoulder blades from 25feet up and watched him surrender in his tracks. My first bear was dead at my feet . As I climed down I noticed him getting smaller by the foot . I carried him out of the thicket whith my stand and bow on my back. He weighed 100lbs and I was the happiest bearhunter in the GALAXY! "I GUESS IM NOT A BEAR HUNTER BUT I GUY WHO HUNTS BEAR'' I hunted the next two seasons and never saw A bear BUT I learned alot about the BIG BOY I was after. This Sept. I found A lot of scat made up of black cherries ,That was his downfall being that there was A grove off about 30 bl.cherrie trees opposite the same skunk cabbage patch I got my first" little boo boo". I THINK HE WAS ONTO THE FAWN BAWLER.So I WAITED HIM OUT. On Sept. 11 we had exstreme winds so I had to get out of my swinging tree soon after watching A nearby tree give up its roots! AND ALL THIS TIME IT WAS POURING BIG, FAT, BLACK CHERRIES. The next day I got out of work at 3 and couldn't drive fast enough to my spot. I knew this was the perfect day to get A look at the BIG BOY. AT 4 o'clock ,earlier than I exspected, he came out off the cabbage and just stood there "for like 2years" then he started sucking up cherries like a carp on corn. I watched him feed toward me for at least 30 min. never giving me A good double lUNG shot that I knew I would need to put him down before he could make it into the swamp.20yds.no shot! I'm going to fall apart soon. Finally he turns around strait away; sss@!#**T!! I draw enyway and at 32yds he turns almost broadside.. WISSP,THUD,GRRRUUNG, CRASH, CRASH, CRASH.QUIET,HISS.290lbs 20 5/16, LUCK, LUCK, LUCK, I ONLY have next day pictures ,I DIDNT GET HIM OUT OF THE WOODS TILL 10:30 THAT NIGHT.THERE CRAPPY BUT I,LL TRY TO POST THEME WhEN I FIGURE OUT HOW. SORRY ABOUT THE SHORT SHOT

Joe, thanks for the story! Exciting! I called my first bear in (two actually) fall before last and pegged the second one. With a rifle though. For me, a heck of a feat. With a bow? That is incredible! Nice going. Looking forward to the pictures, even if they aren't the best.
