With Wintershoek Safaris of RSA. Hunting in RSA was not ever on my radar, much preferring the wilds of Zim or someday Tanzania or Mozambique, but this safari came together in an interesting way. Some of you might remember a few months ago when I posted about a book on the Selous Scouts on behalf of Johnny Vivier, former Scout who also runs said Safari and who I met through a mutual acquaintance at DSC. Anyway, Johnny invited me and my good friend Todd (callsign "Zeke"and also flew with Pugs) to be their guests of honor at their Selous Scout "Mess Night" in Johannesburg this past October, but our schedules just could not support so we took a rain check on a future date and we would also like to include a visit to Rorke's Drift and Isandlwana, as we are both huge fans of the historical aspects of the British Empire and the Zulu Wars.

It just so happens that one of the Scouts is also a historian who specializes in that area and he offered to take us there as well. I have to tell you, this is a huge item on both our bucket lists. Anyway, whilst at DSC two weeks ago, Johnny Vivier suggested if we are traveling all the way to RSA why not make time to hunt? Brilliant if not obvious idea, so we are going to hunt with them, probably gemsbok and sable and who knows what else. In essence, this safari is a sort of "add on, cherry on top" to what we both consider an honor to be hosted by such an august organization of warriors AND to visit the battlefields. I'm also pondering on buffalo (ridiculously pricey in RSA), but in the end, given the much cheaper daily rates and no requirements on length of safari, it might just work out. Now the fun begins, waiting, rifle/caliber selection etc. Film at eleven...

You may want to ask about a cull buffalo.

It is what I'm going to hunt in the future, after some home improvements and a few "honey-do's."

That he is! My friends hunted rhino and PG with him and I'm glad they introduced me to him.

Sounds like a great trip. My wife is itching to get back to SA this year and is meeting with our travel agent tomorrow. I will likely throw a bit of hunting in with our friends there that we spent time with in 2002.

Johnny Vivier is one of Africa's best storytellers. It is worth the price of the daily rate to sit around the fire in the evenings listening to him. Seriously.

Yeah Jeff as you know the safari was really an add on to the SS AGM and the visit to The Drift!

Jorge, wishing you the best on the trip. Yes, buff are expensive is RSA; how far will you be from Kruger? Might be able to hunt one of the areas bordering the park?

Place we are hunting is about two hours north of Kimberly. yes it is expensive but when you look at the Daily Rate as compared to Zim or even Moz plus the number of days, it's really a wash so I'm thinking hard on another buffalo, even though I really do want that sable. I have time to think...or make more money smile

Well, if the buffalo gets added the Verney double 450NE will go, along with my pre-64 in 338. No buffalo, it will be the 338 and my Browning Safari in 300 Win mag. Right now this is what I'm pondering:
Buffalo OR sable
gemsbok
zebra
springbok
and ALWAYS another piggie!
