I have a model 99 1899 Takedown 22 savage High Power. The serial number is 1297XX. I know the butt plate is not original. Not sure if it was ever cut shorter. Is the stock on this gun Straight Grip Recurved Butt Stock or Straight Grip Flat Shotgun Butt Stock? Rubber Butt plate or Steel Butt Plate. I have tried to research this to get the most accurate information that I can get, but want to ask the gentlemen who know a lot more than I do to see if I came up with the right information. Thank You

A pic would help. Two pics actually, one face-on and one from the side. That'll tell us what we're dealing with for sure. Include a measurement from the middle of the trigger to the outside middle of the butt plate (length of pull) and we can tell you if it was cut or not. Assuming it's a 20" barrel M1899H takedown?

Yes correct 20" M1899H takedown. I knew it was a 1899 not the other letters. I am leaving for school in about 5 minutes so I will post pictures later. I may need help. The measurement from the middle of the trigger to the where the stock and butt plate meet is 12 1/4" I will get pics when I get home

Yours will have a perchbelly buttstock, but the curve on the end of the buttstock should look like this. Your original buttplate was probably a hard rubber buttplate, but they cracked pretty easily over the course of 100 yearss of use. So a lot of them have something else installed. The other factory option would have been a smooth, shotgun style. Both styles fit the same curve on the end.

Looks like your stock is a lot longer than mine (12 1/4" from middle of trigger to center of stock in butt plate)

the gun that I am asking about is the bottom 99. I couldn't get the file any larger than this. I hope you can see it. I can send a lot better pic from my cell if anyone wants to PM me a cell phone number. Thanks

Yes, it was cut off. As near as I can tell from the pic it was cut off straight/flat too. At 12 1/4" it is exactly 3/4" shorter than the M1899H takedown perch belly stocks on the ones I have. "Standard" for that gun would be a hard rubber butt plate shaped like the one in Calhoun's pic above. Repro's are found on ebay regularly for around $15-20, but the thing is by the time you fitted one the length of pull would be even shorter by another 1/4" barring no mistakes. Your decision would be based on how short of a stock can you live with.* That may not be too terribly bad, especially if you hunt with it while wearing a pile of heavy clothing.

Since it's already drilled and tapped for scope mounting it's now in the realm of "do with it as you see fit." A (gasp) fresh recoil pad would gussy it up a bit and bring it back to around original overall length. It may not draw the approval of died-in-the-wool collectors but that doesn't detract from its utility as a fun gun to play/hunt with.

* Bear in mind that the length of pull on the old standard straight gripped Type-S stock on the M1903 Springfield rifles was a mere 12 1/2". A lot of salty experts growled about that over the years but about 1.5 million of them served their users admirably nonetheless.

P.S. Headed up in your direction in a couple weeks on a coyote hunting expedition (Cameron County). One of my .22HP 1899H's will be my primary tool.

My suggestion would be to consider a thick, universal grind to fit black buttplate/recoil pad. It originally had a black hard rubber buttplate, so the "look" wouldn't be too far off.

Thanks. Sinnamahoning to be exact. 12 gauge loaded with lead BB shot, and an AR .223 going along as backup. (If I can get a straight answer to its legality for such use from the PA Game Comission. Otherwise the spare rifle will be a .22 Hornet single shot. I would kinda like to use the AR because I have an illuminated reticle scope on it which would be handy when practically dark. We really mean to do the coyotes harm.)

I know a lot of guys here in PA are carrying AR's while coyote hunting this year. I read this earlier this year and I believe the handbook wording states There is significant changes this year. One of the changes stated that you can carry and use a semi auto with no restriction in magazine capacities when hunting furbearers or small game. So I would say that is a yes. I trap coyotes but don't hunt them. I do know a lot of guys that hunt them and they have not run into a problem hunting with AR's. Hope this helps
