So, I'm interested in 336s with half magazine tubes because of aesthetics and balance. Which models were offered in this configuration? What years did those end? Just curious as I'm starting to shop around for one in the future. Thanks.

336 SC or Sporting Carbine had a 20" barrel and pistol grip stock.
336 A or ADL ("A DeLuxe" with factory checkering) had a 24" barrel and pg stock. Not to be confused with the newer 336A which is a hardwood stocked version of the standard 20" full magazine model
30 TK was a special model 336 action I believe made for K-Mart and had an 18 1/2" barrel and straight grip stock.

I don't know the years those were made but they are made no longer.

336 XLR is currently produced and has a 24" barrel and short magazine but is stainless and salt/pepper laminate. They seem to retail somewhat above $700 but I haven't checked lately and in the current market some sellers may have dropped their price a bit.

Those are off the top of my head. I'm no Marlin expert by a long shot so someone might come up with a couple more variations.

I've never heard of the 30 TK. That thing is cool! I'd love to get my hands on one of those. Thanks for sharing.

Did they offer the TK without safety? Or was it too late by then?

I'm sorry but I don't know. They started putting the safety on around 1981 but I don't know when they started making the TK model.

I have a 1989 Marlin 30TK, they were made from approx 1987-1990.

A few years ago my brother expressed an interest in getting one of the 30TK's and asked my opinion. I told him I had shot them before and in my opinion they balanced poorly for offhand shooting and swung poorly for shots at running game because they were too muzzle light. The full length magazine tube models are superior for those uses because they add weight toward the muzzle, especially when the magazine is full. I haven't changed that opinion and would pick a model with full length tube every time for that reason. I suspect one of the 24" barrel half magazine models would be better in that regard as the additional barrel length should add enough weight forward to compensate for the short magzine.

To each his own. The 30TK is the best handling 336 out there IMHO. I've not had issues shooting deer on the move with mine.

The Marlin 336 SC ( sporter carbine) models with the 2/3 magazine have a larger diameter barrel profile than the standard 336c or 336cs models. I find the Marlin sporter carbine models front heavy and personally don't care for them but if your desire more weight up front with the 2/3 magazine the "Sporter Carbine" is your gun.

The Marlin 30TK ( made for Kmart) came with 18 1/2 barrels which will have more muzzle blast. The Glenfield series by Marlin made in the 60's had 20 inch barrels and were offered with the 2/3 magazines.
You would have an easier time finding a Glenfield series Marlin than the 30TK model.

Many Marlin owners of rifles with the 2/3 magazines claim the shorter magazine rifles shoot better and my experience with the 2/3 magazine Marlin rifles bears that out.

What identifies a Glenfield series Marlin? I've seen the reference before but am just now getting interested in .30-30 cal Marlins. I've wanted a .45-70 Marlin for a very long time.

Did a little looking around. I think the Glenfield 30 is what I'll start shopping for. I like the 20 in barrel.

I believe the Glenfield model numbers are model 30 and 36. Most internet ads have them listed as 336 Glenfield.

Do like the looks of that. That's not a full 22' tube is it? Is that just 20'? I'd love to pick up an 1895 in 45-70 with a 20' barrel.

The 336 ER is the 356.

That is pretty neat. I like it. I think I'd have left the finish as is. Or rust blued it myself. Thanks for sharing.

Pile of surface rust all over it when I got it, wood was all black from grime
Had the old school bb gun ramp sight, front sight was tilted.
Light steel wooling with oil on the metal, stripped wood gave it 4- 5 coats of tru oil
Put a Williams peep and.new front sight on it
Zeroed , was impressed how accurate it was.
Got me thru season
Been project for last couple of weeks
Got done with the wood couple days ago, stripped and almost 20 coats of tru oil.
Gonna be a foul weather gun when I'm done
Ain't got nothing cerracoated, so this is gonna be the one and only test crash dummy.

1st tgt is with .093 aperture
Pair at 4 next to bull is 1st 2 at 100 after getting in ball park at 50
High shots are after making adjustment
Went back to original setting and shot pairs putting 7 into the hole
Front sight extremely fuzzy with the. 093
Ordered a .050 and shot the 2nd target about wk later at 100
Front sight extremely crisp
Robs me of about 10 mins of light with the smaller aperature
Gonna get a 1/16th bit and punch it out to .062, and see if helps with some more light in the morning.
