Recently acquired one and having never hunted with a lever action rifle am looking for guidance ? Thinking leupold fxii 4x33 or 1.75x6x32 ? The rifle will be a woods /tree stand gun with the occasional longer shot over a cut over .
I just put a Leupold 6x36 on my newly acquired BLR in 358 Win and it's a great scope. Either one of the ones you are looking at would be very good as well. A real sleeper of a scope is the Burris FF II 2-7x35 with the Ballistic Plex, we have two of these and really like them. It's a durable scope for a great price, I almost stole the one I use on my 270 Win for the 358 but held off and used the spare 6x36.
I have an old steel frame short action BLR 81 with a VX-2 2x7x33 on it. It's about right in my opinion. I have a Burris FF II 2x7x35 with German 4 plex on a Marlin 336 .30-30. The Burris is a good scope but side by side at last light the Leupold is brighter.
Every normal man must be tempted, at times, to spit on his hands, hoist the black flag, and begin slitting throats.
I have two BLR`s in 308. One has a Leupold VX 2 3-9 and the other has a Vortex Viper HS 2.5 - 10. Both scopes are excellent, but my right eye like the Leupold better.
I'd go VX-1 or 2 2-7x33, VX-3 or 3i 2.5-8x36 or similar. A 3-9x40 just looks to big on these rifles imo. My Pre '81 BLR in .358 Win. has a Kahles 2-7x36 on it.
Some people are educated beyond their intelligence.
Respectfully, I don't agree, but maybe I'm biased since that's what I have. Either way having our own opinions is fine. Additionally, to me, looks don't matter much. It's the function that's by far most important to me and the function of the rifle scope combo is great for me. Said differently, even it I agreed with you in that it looks funny I would still almost certainly have the same setup.
Attached is my previously mentioned 308 Win for reference...
I hate it when it looks like someone has a scope with a rifle attached to it. I see lever-actions with 50mm objectives, 4-12x, 4-16x and larger scopes in pawn shops and such and it just looks wrong. I am certainly not against scopes on lever-actions, I have them on all of mine but one and it will get it soon. My favorite scope for leverguns is your choice the 2-7x Leuoold. I have a BLR-81 in 358 but it wears the superb Leupold 2.5-8x. It is my favorite scope of all time and it looks great on the BLR-81.

I used to have a Burris 2-7x Compact on my BLR 81 358,, great scope.but the 1.5-6 Sig ElectroDot is better (for my eyes) in the Michigan UP woods..
I run Leupold VX3 2.5-8x36 on My BLR's (.308, .300 WSM and two .450 Marlins)....I think these scopes look fantastic on a BLR but I also love the look of the 2-7x33 on these rifles, IMO you cant go wrong either way......Hb
I just got a 7-08 ss takedown for a woods gun. I had a spare vx6 2-12x42 that I thought be would be great as I owned it! its not too big but the drop on the straight stock makes it impossible to have a cheek weld so shots go all over the place. I have low talley qd rings/mounts. I am putting a neoprene sleeve on it tomorrow that has the foam inserts to make a 'monte carlo' That will get me inline but then I was planning on putting on a skinner peep setup so I could use and pop off the scope. But then I wont be lined up for the peep with the added height of the cheek piece. So I might just bag the skinner idea and stick with the 2x for close work as the fov is huge. I also thought about putting on a 2.5 leup scout scope with the qd rings and the skinner. Might still do that but use the 2-10 for load building/range work. Or maybe a 2-7/8 and keep it low and get rid of the stock sock. I love the straight stock but its kinda worthless if you want to put on larger optics.
