Just playing with my 6.5x54 Mannlicher Shonaurer(?) and wondering if anyone knows why Savage made their rotary mag so complicated? M.S. made a quick detachable rotary magazine that could be unloaded at the push of a button and easily removed in two seconds flat and relatively easy to work on. Don't get me wrong, I love my 99's as shown by the high number of 99's in the safe as opposed to the single MS but I think a better magazine design was available. Rant over, Rodney

I wonder how the rotar (with Spindle) unit is held in place, in the action. Does anybody know? The 1900 - Savage Savage Arms Co. book/ catalog under "Dismounting" says "you can remove the magazine mechanism independently of the other parts." I wonder if that means you can remove the entire magazine and spindle without touching the other parts. When I took the forearm off and read Longbeardkings' sticky on tensioning the rotor, I didn't see a split ring around the screw (that required a hollowed out screwdriver to hold it) , but an ordinary large fillister head screw with no split ring around it at all. I hope that screw will hold the spring tension when the small screw near the cartridge counter window is removed.

The early rifles didn't have the split ring.

The Mannlicher-Schoenauer (correct spelling) magazine is an engineering marvel indeed. I'm sure its qd feature added to the cost and since the MS was then (and now) way more expensive than the Savage that probably added to it. I get the feeling Savage had to meet a price point to be competitive among cheapskate American sportsmen, where the MS not so much.

I'm still not clear who was first on the draw, Savage or Schoenauer with the rotary mag, and if one plagiarized the other.

I'll probably acquire another MS before I acquire a high end 99.
