So, there has been talk of Grizzly in the area I am looking to trap in AK and on occasion they can get pesky around the cabin.
I don't want to fly in a bunch of "extras" and have a choice between my 12 ga or my 270 WSM.
Not looking for an excuss to get another rifle, but if I should run something else, I'd like to know.

If you are comfortable with the 270WSM then use it. Early 20th century trappers were using Winchester 94 25-20s. You are better off than buying some gun that you can shoot worth crap. You will be fine with that. Find a beat up Ruger 44 super blackhawk for your wife to go to the outhouse.

Should works just fine provided : 1. You can shoot it. 2.You have it with you. 3. You load great bullets. I have tested lots of 277 bullets and suggest either 130 TTSX or 130 E-Tip or 160 Partitions. Use great bullets!
Heck, 458Win killed a big bear with a pipsqueak handgun. I would consider using irons sights for what you need.

Hey kaboku..
She loves wheel guns. I now regret moving out my Ruger Blackhawk/45 Colt...that' been a good potty tripper.
I am comfortable with up to 358 Norma...so far. My old 358WSM was a tack driver. But if I'm good with the 270 WSM, and she's good with the 44, as you indicate., then that answers that.
Thanks

Any issues with the T3x's in that climate.

no. People still use Mosin-Nagants on traplines. You just use johnson's paste wax when its cold.

I'd be less concerned with the rifle and more concerned with the wife's opinion on moving out to a cabin in the cold and dark with no social interaction.

Nosler makes a 160gr in .277 and Woodleigh makes a 180. I have some of each, but have never shot them so I can’t comment on accuracy in a standard 10 twisted barrel. They ought to penetrate good though

They ought to penetrate good though The 130 TTSX will out penetrate either of these. The 140 TSX will out-penetrate the 130 TTSX. I’d look to either of those Barnes bullets if I needed maximum penetration in a .270 Win, WSM or Roy. They’ll hold together, too, even impacting right off the muzzle.
What could be a sadder way to end a life than to die having never hunted with great dogs, good friends and your family?

Very good point, and would appy to her...you're right. She does like her quiet though, and spending time with our two kitties..great mousers they. Plus she likes to craft and busy herself. Nature and solitude fits her needs also. If she needs, I am happy to fly her out a time or two to visit friends and revisit civilization (or whatever it's called). She married me, so she's abviously a real Trooper.!

If truly for use just around the cabin, I would probably opt for the 12 gauge. Plus, your wife can entertain herself with birds while you are out running your line, if she is of that mindset.

Yep, she'll probably to taking their heads with her new 44, and tying flies for trout with the feathers..

I like the thought of that Hanco. But if my 270 will serve me then it's just one less item for storage from thieves. Now, the 12ga has irons on it. I had them installed, it's an old Win 97 with a cut down barrel to 20" just concerned about it holding up to rust and such, so maybe I'll just put irons on the T3x SS, or a 1x scope. My wife has her Win 94 32 Spl that she shoots well, she'd actually shoot that better than any revolver. She likes wheel guns, but her hands are small, and in the heat of the moment, I think she'd shoot better with that 94. Hope we never have to find out. If it comes to that, and we must shoot, are the Grizzlies edible, or would they be best used for bait.???

As a primary “hunting” rifle the 270 WSM will do just fine. As indicated by others, upyoure going to want an everyday carry firearm of some sort. A stout wheel gun if you’re competent with it is fine and much handier than a long gun. I prefer long guns simply because I’m better with them and it gives me a bit more range. Used to carry a 338wm with irons, now I have a Ruger Hawkeye chambered in 375 Ruger with irons. Do I “need” a 375? No, anything reasonably stout will suffice. I just wanted to mess with one so I got one. Your everyday carry firearm is going to see lots of miles in about every condition that exists in the interior. I’d get something stainless that you won’t mind beating the crap out of. I generally carry something reasonable for bears until mid to late December. After that I’m not as concerned and with a bounty on wolves around here I like having something with a little range without the trajectory of a catapult. You’re also really going to want a good 22lr of s9me sort. There’s all kinds of critters to fill the pot with that a 22 is more than adequate for.

Yes griz are edible. Like black bears, their diet at the moment can really dictate whether you want to indulge. If they’ve been eating lots of carrion or fish they get pretty gnarley.
You’re not going to want an optic on your everyday carry. I don’t care how good an optic is on it, it WILL fog and in the dark picking up a fast mov8ng target is much more difficult.

Heck, 458Win killed a big bear with a pipsqueak handgun...
For 25 yrs prior Phil carried .44mag for such purposes without ever having to use it in such manner, yet luck would have it he takes 9mm the one time(in 33 yrs) he needs to engage a bear (in such manner) Saying " Do you feel lucky, punk?" just doesn't have the same effect with a girl scout 9mm vs .44 Uber-mag...

Starman,
Thank you for the post.
I am very sorry for my attitude toward you at one time on here, and I was out of line, hope we can get back to being civil, and that you would forgive my words and actions.
Sincerely, Scott
