Im about ready to sell off my #1 in .458 win mag and get an 1895. What can be done about the huge forend? I dont really want to get a nice piece as Im gonna drag it through the brush after hogs. I just hate that ugly forend. Anybody trimmed one down? Anybody make a fairly inexpensive replacement? Thanks

Well, you can take ahold of a rasp and some sandpaper . . . or check out www.treebonecarving.com for a replacement . . .

I have a Marlin 1895CB and am not quite sure what is "huge" to you about the fore end.

The cowboy isn't "huge" it's the other models that I don't like. So, can the others be whittled down to CB dimensions? I don't suppose a CB forend will work with a round barrel model.

Don't know why the others couldn't be whittled down to your liking, they look like there's plenty of wood to lose. Maybe a call to George Petersen at Treebone would be worthwhile, I don't think you could take a fore stock off a Cowboy and make it work . . . maybe could, maybe not.

I took mine off and cut 3/16" of and inch off both sides on the table saw. Then fitted it to the action and forend cap. After I had it fitted I hand rubbed an oil finish and now it looks like it should have from the factory.

What's the secret to getting the forend cap off? Mine would not come off after taking the screw out. Does it just need a little force with a wooden dowel rod? Thanks...Bill.

I don't remember for sure and my gun is up at my dads house and as its snowing pretty hard here in the northeast it may be a day or so till I get a chance to look at it. I'll let you know as soon as i can.

I took quick look at it this afternoon and if I remember right you have to take the screws out of the cap and the cartridge tube and pull everthing out together. Didn't have time to pull it all apart but that should help you out.

I have to agree with you. I don't know why Marlin feels as if they need to use the whole tree on their fore ends. I just finished redoing mine and plan to do the same to my others.

Forgive the vest and netting, I was photographing tactical knives this morning.
