Love that checkering. Still kick myself that I didn't keep the refinished but checkered 1895 I had in my hands - should have kept it and had the checkering refreshed.
That's a rare one. What's the front sight?

more sights lyman 56S. Nick Strobel doesn't list a 56S. 1930's production definitely didn't leave the factory this way. The middle sight is a very low Lyman #6. I figured it had been filed down but the white diamond is in a milled diamond shaped recess. [img]the front sight is a very low Lyman marked REG.U.S.PAT.OFF. It looks like the Lyman jack sight in the 1895 catalog. more.

Other pics. It has these holes on the stock for a tang sight. It doesn't look like this type of tang sight was ever mounted. I think Don has a rifle with one of these tang sights. serial numbers on the BP and BS match the serial number on the receiver. The barrel is marked with both the M and JM Marlin stamps. My 1895 half octagon with high grade wood, color cased receiver, SRAC hard rubber buttplate and probably non-factory checkering also has both stamps. The JTC letter on the 1/2 octagon doesn't list any of this. It is also a matching # rifle. I'm really happy with the rifle although I may not be financially able to buy any more 99's this year. David

I've got that same exact rear sight on a gun I was just playing with this last week... now if I could remember which gun I was playing with. But yours hasn't been messed with from what I can see.
Rear sight is in the 1895/1899 catalog as a "Leaf sight", price $1.00
I don't think the front sight is the catalogued "Jack" sight, I think the "Jack" has vertical front and back rather than sloping.

The white diamond portion of the leaf sight in the 1895 catalog looks taller than this sight like the Lyman #6's I have on some other rifles. The notch in the fold up notched portion of this sight is also taller than the white diamond portion. Rory, you are right about the front sight. Maybe all 3 were added at the same time in the 1930's or later. I don't see anything like the front sight in the catalog. It looks closet to the #31 in Stroebels only it's shorter. David

I'm going to send for a letter. The serial number is only 27 lower than the serial # on the half octagon. David

Actually Stroebel does list a 56S. In my copy it's on pg. 36. But you have to look hard to find it. Somebody screwed up when the book was printed, and the 56S section is printed as the last line under 56R12.
It states: 56S Savage Model 1899 rifles and carbines, all calibers.
The general write up on the 56 says it was available by 1935.

Hubba hubba! If one were to blow all his spending money on 1 gun for the year, that would be the one. Nice snag.

This may be totally irrelevant, but what is the caliber? I would assume .303? What is the length of that octogan barrel? I would love to know the travels such a marvelous piece of history has made.

It's a .303, 22" barrel, and all I know about it is I got it from a dealer in Ormond Beach, Fl.
