I did testing to see how high I need to mount the scope for casing to clear from hitting the scope. I have all my rifle scopes mounted just off the barrel so I have no knowledge on this subject other than closer is better.
At this height the casing is still hitting the scope barely. To get the casing to clear completely I need to raise the scope .08 inches or about a 1/12 of inch.
The scope is currently sitting .7 inches from the barrel. I estimate from the center of the bore to the middle of the objective lens to be approximately 2". Measured with a micrometer, so should be close.
This is not the scope I'm going to use but has pretty identical measurements to the Leopold VX 3i 3.5 to 10 with CDS system. I plan on shooting out to 450-500 max.
This setup height just looks ridiculous to me.
Is this setup going to work? Or do I need to be contact Sako to see what can be done about this? If this is going to work which set of optilock rings will I need? Medium, High?
Yep that’s why I returned my Sako 85 30-06. Medium height sako optilocks did allow it to function with a leupold scope. But sako mediums put the scope way up in the air much like your picture.
I am testing empty unfired cases. They are hitting the turret. I'm not concerned about fully loaded ammunition.
I have a Forbes that ejects high and will hit most scope turrets. I was able to mount both a Leupold VXII 4-12 AO and a Swaro Z5 3.5-18 in normal low mounts. Both scopes have very thin windage caps and the ejection cleared both just fine even though several other scopes would not work, even scopes without large turrets.

The horizontal turret on the Leopold VX 3i 3.5 to 10 with CDS system is the same size on the scope I'm testing. However I'm not willing change scopes. The gun will go before the scope would.
Good Gawd! That scope is high....I quit Sako 85 rifles for this reason and I dont like the scope mounting system...I sure hope you get her straightened out but im afraid its hopeless, this is a well known issue........Hb

In that case, personally I don't find anything special about either,so take your pick.
Yep crap design with the ejector at 6 o’clock. I returned a 270 wsm that done it. The case would fall back into action and jam when chambering the next load. Plenty of examples of this out there. Return it for a refund.
I'm not sure about switching scopes helping, but I'd never keep a sell a rifle so I could keep a CDS. CDS I have is total junk. No more L for me until they get their head out of their azz
We can keep Larry Root and all his idiotic blabber and user names on here, but we can't get Ralph back..... Whiskey Tango Foxtrot, over....

Wow! Did Beretta actually refund your purchase price? I tried to get a refund on an 85 for this issue and they told me my rifle was in spec..(My experience was several years ago) ....Hb
That is the design function of the 3 lug bolt. Just about everyone I have owned in all makes, has had that problem. Location of the extractor makes the empty cases go too high.
I was just trying to point out that not all M85's have ejection issues. Not sure why some do and others don't. I thought the problems were more common on long action cartridges.
Are you cycling the cases at normal hunting type speeds?
