I've read here and there that serious tusks are becoming rare in African elephants. Have been watching a kenyan natl park webcam lately and it seems that the elephants who show up have got a LOT of tusk. some more than others, but I'd expect that in any herd.

They are at the water hole now. Link

Is this herd representative of a lot of Africa?

I am reading Selous' account of elephant hunting in the 1870s and even back then tusks over 60 pounds were not the norm. Fifty pounds per side was a good set then, and today.

Given the value of ivory, I suspect few are making into the older age classes.

It is interesting how Selous felt the continent was pretty well shot out even in that day.
