I picked up my newly acquired Ruger M77 MKII from my gunsmith today after having a Timney trigger installed. It is fantastic except for one thing I didn’t check at the smiths... in the full rearward or lock position, my bolt does not lock; it will pick up about 2/3 of the way to unbolting the rifle. Is this normal with a Timney trigger? It won’t open all the way and the mid position safety works correctly even on bump tests. I’ve sent an email to my smith already and will call in the am. Just not sure if this is correct or not.

I installed a timney in mine several years ago so maybe things have changed but my bolt does not lift any when safety is on. My gun was bought new in 1996.

My bolt does not lift in full safety mode.
By the way, in case you missed it, Jeremiah was a bullfrog.

I have quite a few MKII/Hawkeyes with timneys, In the full rearward position it should lock the bolt.

On the Ruger MKII and Hawkeye blocking the trigger and locking the bolt are two independent functions although the safety lever does activate both.
The swinging safety is attached to a cam or shelf that goes under a tab on the trigger to keep it from moving. That shelf is flat and stops trigger movement in the middle and rearward positions. Ideally there should be zero movement of the trigger.
The bolt locking is controlled by a pin in the bolt shroud that is pushed forward by the safety as it goes into position in the slot at the rear of the striker. The front of that pin physically blocks the bolt handle from moving. You can lock the bolt closed with the safety in forward (fire) position just by pushing in that pin with your thumb. It should be completely locked or unlocked, no halfway. You can lift and lower the bolt handle while slowly pushing that pin in, the bolt will open freely right up to where one more millimeter push and the bolt is completely locked. So even if for some reason the safety isn't swinging all the way to the rear so it is fully in that slot, the bolt should either open freely or be locked completely.
I'm wondering if the gunsmith futzed with that locking mechanism in the bolt shroud?
Either way, definitely take it back to the gunsmith and show him.
Gunnery, gunnery, gunnery. Hit the target, all else is twaddle!

What Jim in Idaho said. The operation you describe is not right.

Bring it back to him Sorry I had it wrong, your gunsmith overdid the safety cam. YOu need a new safety cam and he needs to regrind it right. BTW I just picked up a M77 in 7mag that will need a Timney trigger as well. I have done a few of these.
