I was checking our investments and had never counted how many different funds/stocks I had. I guess over the years as you add one here and there, it starts to add up.
Between my work 401k and our other accounts, we are 28 stocks and 39 Mutual funds. Just interested in other situations for comparison

I am not asking what or how much just, how many.

I consolidated a while back to about 5 vanguard funds and don't really look at them much anymore.

Seems like that level of diversification in retirement accounts would expose the investor to excess unnecessary fees and dilute potential results because of multiple overlapping investments and objectives.

And only how many minutes per month are needed to keep up with all those funds and stocks? Probably a lot of duplication of objectives among those funds. Hope you aren't near to age 70.5 and minimum distribution requirements....

I am not a stock watcher. If the dow goes up I make money , if it goes down I lose money. I do look at the individual from time to time but I am invested in common place stuff. You use it everyday kind of stuff so you know if something is hinky.

I do pay a small fee yearly so I don't get transaction fees if I buy/sell. I can call my Broker/Account manager at any time and do a portfolio review. I have no duplicates and yes I have similar holdings.

A am a long ways from RMD but it gets closer every day

As far as stocks and bonds, five, with the vast majority of money in four. One relatively small one for high risk / high reward.

A lot, equities, mutual funds , Etf's, and investments that shoot.

Or as Roger Rule has done -- Bespoke shotguns.

If you are going to invest in 1 thing and don't want to watch it buy vanguard - VTI.

I am in 25 . About half are stocks and half are ETF's. I have on mutual fund , an S&P 500 index fund. I do have duplicates like Vanguard and Fidelity healthcare ETF's. It doesn't matter much and they perform almost exactly the same. I could streamline and sell some but they are in taxable accounts. It would not matter if I didn't go over the 15% tax bracket though cause they are in long term holdings, ( over 1 yr).

Don't know the exact number, but enough to keep making me a nice return along with my adviser happy.

FatCity, explain yourself further if you can regarding the fees. You are probably 80% correct about duplication of securities held within the funds, no guarantee either way, and I hope he runs a report to check. Close to 100% backward on your dilution comment. Why do you assume his fees are high? He did not mention which Fund Family's he in, you must have ESP. What if he used his price leverage in a low fee family? You just seem to pop off with little explanation, why, your knowledge only skin deep like most of Californians. Do you work in the management of Investment vehicles, or just come out of the peanut gallery?

Did similar a few months ago with my Fidelity account. Three index funds, US equities, International equities and bonds. I have a chunk in company provided stock that pays a great dividend and then my fun money that is split between International growth and tech.

401(K) = 2 mutual funds
Roth IRA = 1 mutual fund
Brokerage = 5 stocks (80% being a former employer that I got a discount buying. Luckily banks are doing well, cause MAGA)
LendingClub P2P Loans
WorthyBonds P2P Bonds
Junk silver coins
PCGS coin collector, so I guess that counts
Pamp Suisse Gold

Okie, ya still got AMZA? I will buy more at this price, but not much more. It has to head higher soon.
