That's cool. Never knew we hadn't found it yet. My grandpa served on the Lexington vol. 2 (CV-16) that's now in Corpus Christi, TX.

Not nearly as much corrosion / marine growth as I'd expect after 65 years.

Kinda cool to see the Wreakage of the Devastator Dive bomber....

most of the ones the Navy had were lost very quickly when the war started..

IIRC, most were lost at the Battle of the Coral Sea...

Long way down there. It would be nice if some of the aircraft could be recovered, restored and placed at the Naval Aviation Museum in Pensacola.

That was pretty cool. We paid a heavy price in those early years of the war.

J, Is that depth 3012 feet or fathoms? Either way, long way down.

Jeff I think it's 3K meters or close to two miles.

Thank you for posting that Sycamore! Too deep for the salvage thieves I hope. And its a war grave.

My dad was one of the sailors that went into the water 8 May, 1942 when the order was given to abandon ship. He told me the Lex was in over 10000 feet of water when she was scuttled. He would have been amazed the she was found.

I'm going to have to re-read "Pacific Crucible". I think that one goes through the Battle of the Coral Sea, and covers Midway as well.

It does cover 1941-1942, through the battle of Midway. I really like Toll's history writing style. His second volume, "The Conquering Tide" is even better. Greatly look forward to final volume of the Pacific war.
