I picked up my 3rd 284 and I was wondering what year it is. 10840xx lever boss code 9R. It’s pressed checkered but I haven’t seen the checkered diamonds on the underside of the fore grip before. If I could figure out a way to post pics I would.

It sounds like you might have a newer forearm, it should have pressed checkering as well, I'll send you a PM to help with pictures.

I have a double diamond press checkered .243 DL sitting here in front of me by chance, 1965, 10878xx. Got another in the safe in 308 and a few E's and F's with the same stocks. Have a 99DE .308 #10844xx, how's that for close? Also 1965.

That's ok only paid 500 for it. It will be my hunting 284 that way I don't have to take my 284 F out anymore.

I actually have an extra correct buttstock that matches the forearm you have there. I "might" could be talked out of it. It's stripped and ready for finish. DL wood is so hard to come by I grabbed it when I saw it, even though I didn't have a need for it yet. I'd have to think hard on that. But your level of enthusiasm may not be there to match it up anyhow. .

I assumed the forearm on yours was the correct of the two based on the ones sitting here. I may have a DL forearm to match your buttstock if you'd rather go that way as well. I'd have to check.

Here's a proper 1965 DL in .243. I suspect the buttstock on yours is not original.

Took me a few years to find a good DL in .243, and even then not cut checkered like the rest I have. At least they were still walnut. cool I suspect the OP's DL should look like this one.

The older I get the less concern I have with pressed checkering. It's just what Savage had to do to keep the 99 and business competitive.

I don’t have any 110s, but that doesn’t mean there’s no interest. If I had a post mil 99 then I could talk myself into a companion 110.
