My oldest daughter at 13 yo once made us sit in the car and wait at the gas station for nearly ten minutes. I told her the punishment was to walk home, about seven miles of nearly deserted country road.
But I am not a complete cad. I followed along in the car and made sure she stayed safe.
It sure pissed off her maternal grandma.

I didn't run to school, but I did a LOT of running after school. Track and cross country takes a lot of miles of exercise. We'd run a mile just to warm up. Go for it kid!

There is plenty of (unwarranted) criticism out there for this, but can you imagine how much more there would be if the school had levied the punishment?
Not a real member - just an ordinary guy who appreciates being able to hang around and say something once in awhile.

Had about 20 different yards we cut through
Never liked to walk the roads; the 'hippies' would throw bottles out of cars at us kids.

Kids in this town all walk/bike to school. Over a half mile for many.
And they do it from kindergarten on up, no supervision, even when it's 20 below. No wonder people like to hire a Dakota kid for work. Things that make coasters shake in their boots seems like a normal event to an 8-year old out here.

Kid's dad was too nice. My ol' man made me walk 1.5 miles each way for 9 years, sun, rain, snow or whatever. Uphill both ways. Carrying my books without a pack. And do the freakin' homework every night. And wash the dishes. And mow the grass, feed the dogs, clean the guns and birds/squirrel/bunnies. And wipe my own ass.
Had to clean the fish too.
