Been looking for a S & W 547 for a long time, On the BBL it states "9 mm CTGS" ( or so ).
Is it true, that SEVERAL 9 mm calibers might be fired safely through this gun?
.380 ( 9 x 17 ), 9 mm Police ( 9 x 18 ), 9 mm ( 9 x 19 ) ( of course ), .38 ACP??( 9 x 23 SR ), .38 Super? 9 mm Browning Long ( 9 x 20 SR ), 9 mm Steyr, 9 mm Largo ( 9 x 23 ), 9 mm Mauser?
( not that these calibers are THAT common )
NOT 9 mm Makarov ( 9 x 18 ).
Anybody there who knows?
Thanks in advance, Hermann
P.S.: I do not want that gun because of this capability or not. But I do think that reloading form a 9 mm mag is pretty practical
And, really, I just want it "because I want it"
;-)

An honest man! Most of us are much more delusional than that.

No, you cannot fire those cartridges in a S&W 547. It is for 9mm Luger (9x19 parabellum) only.

GunGeek is right 9mm parabellum period. The 547 is a rather rare revolver over here as it was essentially developed by S&W for NATO and Israel contracts where the 9mm is the only option. Designing a revolver for a rimless case was a real headache and eventually unprofitable for Smith & Wesson so there aren't many here in the states. I've had a few and smithed a few, and getting extractor parts from Springfield was a very interesting experience. These extractor stars utilize trick little beryllium copper fingers that fit in a six grooved extractor stem that when pushed out they slip under the case head lip so the cases can be drawn. The machining and parts of this set-up are unlike any other revolver. Anyway these guns are chambered for the 9 Luger/Parabellum only and honestly they are very accurate and handy K- frame revolvers with square or round butt frames and either 3 or 4" barrels. If you have access to any of these I'd be interested

Hello!
Gun is there. It´s quite heavily used, in the sense of "carried a LOT".
I cleaned it, and look forward to shoot it.
I ( carefully ) put in 6 .380 rounds. They dropped right in the chambers.
Matter of fact, they dropped VERY deep in ... too deep.
And as there is a rather sharp "step" in the chambers, I am sure thats for headspacing the 9 mm ... and that rules out longer cartridges.
So ist 9 mm Parabellum ( yea, I know ... "Luger" ) only.
The "fingers" for ejection are very weak ... and work only for some mm´s. So too hot rounds are unwise.
Still, reloading from a 9 mm mag is cool.

It´s a 3", the 4inchers are cheaper than the 3 inchers. Both seldom, though.
The original Banana grip is VERY comfortable, but mine is slightly damaged on some places. Still totally useable, cosmetic blemishes.
And I got a Pachmayr Compact just in case, which doesn´t add bulk.
