have heard a bit about that. hate speech is becoming problematical. probably other kinds as well. we're seeing it seep into our system. i don't expect it to lessen, only increase. it's because of what this country has become.

First you have to know that the National Lawyer's guild was founded as an alternative to the American Bar Association (ABA) because the ABA was way too conservative(!). They have a checkered past: According to historian Harvey Klehr, the NLG was allied with the Communist Party; in the 1930s a significant number of NLG founders had been members or fellow travelers of the Communist Party USA,[10] including Riemer and Joseph Brodsky of the CP's International Labor Defense auxiliary.[7] During the McCarthy era, the NLG was accused by Attorney General Herbert Brownell Jr. as well as the House Un-American Activities Committee of being a Communist front organization.[11][12] Federal Bureau of Investigation director J. Edgar Hoover repeatedly tried to get successive Attorneys General to declare the NLG a "subversive organization," but without success.[13] It is generally thought that the First Amendment was written to protect political speech above all as necessary for self-governance. And of course it gets nasty fast. The inspiration must have been the brutal suppression of any speech against the king leading up to the Revolution. Compare with merely making a snowflake uncomfortable. As far as I'm concerned the National Lawyer's Guild can do something unnatural with itself.

People seriously misconstrue what the 1st Amendment is, and does. Amendment I~Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances. It doesn't mean you can say what you want, when you want about whom you want, and have no consequences. It DOES mean that the Federal Government cannot pass laws or restrict your freedom of speech, freedom of the press, or religion. It doesn't protect you from other people. It doesn't protect you from censorship in a venue that someone else owns. It just protects you from government. Interestingly, those that shout "Freedom of Speech" the loudest... The Media... are the very people most responsible for censorship and lies now.

Try telling your boss or the owner of the company you work for just what you think of them and see how far free speech gets ya!
Try telling the cop that just pulled you over just what an ass he is and see what free speech does for ya!
Try telling the plant manager of a GM plant exactly how far up his ass he can drive his new GM and you'll never build another GM production line again!
As simple as these examples are....I had to learn em the hard way!!!! (and never regretted em either)!

I like the right to remain silent. An example of free speech would be " what do you think?" As far as saying what you believe or know is right is not a good course of action.

Lewis and Clark Law School (Portland, OR) is a private institution so they can do whatever they want. However the proposition that political speech can be limited under the First Amendment (short of speech intended to cause imminent lawless action and is likely to incite or produce such action (Brandenburg)) is still obnoxious.

the first amendment and the second amendment are really close in relationship to each other, right?
no need to call for fire in the theatre when there isn't.
on the other hand, free speech is a given.

Yup, Second Amendment for protection of life (inalienable right) and to preserve self-governance (liberty, another inalienable right). Remember at the time only the king's buddies were permitted to bear arms (including swords).

As simple as these examples are....I had to learn em the hard way!!!! (and never regretted em either)! That's all quite different. You are talking about appropriate speech,not freedom of speech. One goes to realization of the situation, the other goes to speech related to maintaining freedom.
