Thinking about loading up the last of my 180 grain Silvertips in 300 Savage for my 99EG. But does any one have any experience in the field with this bullet? How do they perform on deer? Might try them on the last week of Marylands rifle season. Thanks Eric

Eric I use Silvertips When I Can on My 99's. Love-Em. Also SKIDROW Likes them too He Just took 5 boxes off me a Couple Of Weeks ago in 150 Grainers and that's all He Hunts With. Had the Chance Last week to Meet Him in Person In Norhtern Wisconsin. Great Guy. Imagine he Drives all the Way from Washington to Hunt Wisconsin. 2 Day Drive. Any How Good Ammo, On Deer. Although I prefer the 150 grain silvertips for Whitetails, the 180's should work fine. I took several deer with them in the distant past

I also love the Silvertips but I like 150gr. Having said that I used Bronze points on my buck this year. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif" alt="" />

180 grainers are great when shooting through brush. ' took a fine doe with a 300 99 "F" feeding under wild apple trees in a thicket.
Good luck!

Come On Bert! That was Not 180 Grainers Ya Used! Tank-Yes! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> The 180 Grainers will do Fine! I Prefer 150's or 165(Remington) But Do Use 180's a Lot When Up-North, Looks Strange When I go through the Woods with The Tank, or My 50 Cal on my 4 Wheeler. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> Steve

My EG so far likes the 180gr's more than 165's or 150's.. and the 180's work just as well at close range. Gonna keep playing with loads next year to find a good 150gr though. There's always hope.

This is not a direct answer to your question, but once I shot a huge buck through the chest with a 180 grain and the darn thing didn't expand. Small hole in, small hole out. Deer ran almost half a mile before expiring. I never had that problem with the 150 grains I normally use. I'm no expert so it may have just been a coincidence and nothing to do with bullet weight.
I also must admit that this is with factory ammo so, as I said, not directly relevant to your question about silver tips.

I got one 180 left from the 2nd box ever through my 1955 f. It will be the round in the chamber come Saturday morning. Time to get down to Bass Pro for more 180's in the off season.

Well, my trip to the range was a quick one. The 180 Silvertips shot real good. 1 inch groups at 100 yards. A little low though. I have the 99EG sighted in 1 inch high at 100 yds with 165gr. Sierras behind 41.0 grains of IMR 4064. They will shoot just under an inch. I think I am just going to stick with the 165 gr. Sierra load this year. Now I have to run back out to the range and fire the 99EG again. Came home and put the barrel band on for the sling and forgot to shoot it with the sling on to see if it changed the impact of the round. The last little change I made was putting an extra washer on the stock bolt because the stock was a little loose. That caused my bullet impact to drop 6 inches low. It's always something! Thanks for everyones imput on the Silvertips. ----Eric

Sorry for the delay in responding. I haven't been keeping up with the forum lately. Have you been up Peshtigo way lately? Not much snow on the ground right now but that is supposed to change tomarrow.

180 grainers were the load of choice in northern Minnesota until you couldn't buy them any more. Now its 150 grain only if you can find them - or else reload.

My sister-in-law teaches school in Peshtigo. We blow though there every now and then. A little too close to the Yoopers for my taste! So ya wanta go for a pasty and a beer?
