minimal food costs is quite the subject.

how best should food flow into the marketplace?

we've got folks who buy high end beef & low-end pork.

a lot of folks just want to eat two or three meals a day, usually.

we're seeing european based Aldi & Lidl move into the us. what gives?

with all the technology available today, why don't we move to minimize food costs?

That is up to the consumer. The market is determined by what the customer buys.

i agree totally with your assessment.

food is an essential. we have to have food energy in order to write the check for the mortgage, propane gas, or car pymnt.

a lot of consumers, like me, have a ton of choices within a few miles of my house.

we can buy stuff on the way home from work each day.

but, prices do vary.

with plenty of food available for selection we can shop around.

not so much around here either. lot's of marketeers are selling grass-fed beef as better than grain fed. and maybe it is, if that's what the consumer chooses.

consumer choice.

but, is there enough choice, pray tell?

i like the idea of grain fed, but it appears that grass-fed beef has taken over the marketplace? if so, that's good too.

The govt seems to have that formula down pretty well.

But you have to be a democrat to get it.

No Thanks.

The average cost of food would drop dramatically if everyone cooked from scratch. Pre-consumer food prep adds a bunch to the cost of it.

The absolute best way to minimize food cost is to eat Soylent Green & Tabasco sauce.

i certainly agree with your assessment. a lot of folks have no clue as to the add-on cost of packaging.

but it is how the system has evolved. lot's of folks shop by product location on the shelf.

maybe it can't be fixed, but only let prices move higher to meet consumer wants?

I raised a family on rice, beans, chicken leg quarters, sardine gumbo, and folding furniture. I retired from the military at forty and now drink $50 a bottle whiskey. It just requires a little thought.

Two songs you can listen to real close:

Better Class of Losers -Randy Travis

Luckenbachtexas -Waylon Jennings

Milk is 66 cents for a half gallon at the Walmart here , a dozen of eggs is stupid low too, Don't give Walmart credit for that though , Lidl caused it when they moved in to this territory. I hope Lidl can stick. Competition amongst retailers is good for consumers.

Food is the cheapest it's ever been in human history, that's the reason we've got 7 billion and counting people on the planet. Grass fed beef is a luxury, it's certainly not necessary to spend $20 a pound for stuff like that to live. Basic nutrition can be had for pennies a day. Boutique foods like grass fed beef and organic vegetables shouldn't be used as an argument that food is expensive. There's always somebody willing to sell a bored housewife something at a ridiculous price if she's willing to pay it.

The world's population didn't really start taking off until the latter part of the 19th century when nitrogen fertilizer was being developed and made feeding all those people cheaper and easier. If you're concerned with the population of the earth being unsustainable then look to cheap food, that's what's caused the population boom.

U S citizens spend the lowest per cent of household income on food than any other country.

I have a buddy addicted to hog hunting and has the resources to do it in stlye , frequently.
His wife however won't allow the trips if there is a freezer full of meat. So he calls me every couple months to come over and clean it out.
Plus I get free deer hearts from the local processor all season. In addition to my 10 deer and however many the wife kills. 6 chickens, 3 fig trees, two pear trees an a garden.
1.5 hours from the reservation I've been fishing 40 years and pull 10 fish limit of rainbows in 4-5 hours
But we don't eat any grains or processed foods so our Diet keeps out food bill up during the off months.
