My grandaddy always had a paperback novel with him, and there were shelves covered with them in his house. He read a ton of Louis L'Amour novels and I decided to give those a try when I was very young. I think I ended up reading a hundred or more of them, who knows...but a phrase I had read in more than one of them referred to someone who "would do to ride the river with," meaning he'd be a worthy trail partner. While signing up for a gun-related forum back around 2001 or so, I came up with my handle under pressure and just stuck with it.
Some old coot on another forum which is long gone took issue with my handle and expressed contempt and distrust because there evidently is or was a motorcycle gang using the name in Ohio or Pennsylvania, I think.

My name on the Ruger Forum is Bear Paw Jack, which I also used for SASS Shooting. Couldn't get it to accept that here so I used Cariboujack who was a character in one of Russell Annabel's books.

Mine is sort of a not-so-secret handshake that any present or prior LEO from Alaska should be able to figure out who I am. A.P.D. doesn't have badge numbers, they issue employee numbers known as DSN's. Thus my handle is;
Anchorage Police Department Department Serial Number 0 8 6 4

Nickname I picked up in my late teens, from Jack Nicholson's character in "One flew over the Cuckoo's Nest", plus my initials. Most of those who called me by that name are dead now.

Mudhen was the name of an airboat that my uncle and his partner produced for a while. Back in the early days of the CB radio craze, I used it for a handle. It's basically a southeast Texas/southwest Louisiana vernacular name for the American coot.
The Campfire was the first online forum that I ever thought about joining, and I was feeling my age that day, so I thought that Mudhen was an appropriate screen name for an old coot! Also called mudhen up here.

Ha, we should have had a post, getting us to guess how we think some came up with their names. for example "paddler" probably because he paddles little ones, of course that could also be the handle for Northman, I believe his is cut from the same cloth

I was a Blackhawk pilot, so it seemed natural. A pilot was "showing off" for us and decided to "drop the bird". Making our approach to the Ship, the pilot thought it would be a good idea to mess with us.... We free fell, fu. K ing, dropped a 100' or more before he got control of it. Good times....

“Goodnews,” as in The Gospel, God’s redemptive plan for mankind, was my original handle in 2004 I believe. As some point I reverted back to my actual name as reminder to me that I would not write anything anonymously on a forum that I would not say publically to an audience (including my views on liberalness as expressed theologically, socially, and politically which I would) or in a face-to-face scenario. Mark, things are fine here. Wish I could have made it to Tonto, but it just wasn't in the cards. Maybe next year. Tell 'The Warden" I said 'howdy'.

I also love etymology of English, Greek, Hebrew & Latin.
You cover more languages than I do. I'm more interested in why we say what we do, and what it meant then and now. I am the same. I especially love rightfully dividing the old sayings. My absolute favorite is Southern Talk. My g’mothers favorite lines were: “you better get in here and get eat.” Or, d’you git eat yet?” And my favorite, “it’ll git eat.”
