I saw an old advertisement for the model F and in the picture the rifle had a rubber butt pad. I was wondering if this was true that they installed butt pads on new rifles for the model F.

When you say old, how old are you talking? I'm not familiar with a rubber buttpad until 1977, and never on an F.

A friend of a friend, while fishing , said he had this really old 99, was his grandfathers. Turned out to be a 65 pressed checkered DL. I consider that a new 99.

Just bought a 284 F that qualifies as a curio and relic. That was a strange realization.
And yeah, F's never came from factory with a recoil pad. 99C's, brush guns, yeah.

That provokes a question I never thought to ask. Did Savage, during the "modern" era ever employ a Custom Shop wherein a customer could order a new 99 built to his whimsy- custom engraving, finish, stock length, recoil pad, sights, etc.? Not a Repair/Warranty shop, but a real custom shop.

I have never heard of such a thing with Savage, but could a customer send his rifle back to the factory to have a pad installed? I knew an old gunsmith who said he always hated installing kick pads on account of the dust it made during sanding. Of course this was "back in the day" before anyone thought of protection measures we take for granted these days such as ear muffs and dust collection systems in shops.

I ran across that VERY rifle years ago in 308 with a post reticle scope and didnt buy it thinking the recoil pad was aftermarket with the stock possibly cut. Was I wrong?

I wonder if that ad was a joint effort between Lyman and Savage, farmed out to an agency whose artist used a pic of Uncle Bill's deer rifle.

I had a older Williams gunsight co catlog,1957 or 1958 where they sold new guns. They also offered a custom savage 99F from their shop, barrel cut to 19" new front sight, added rubber recoil pad,and williams scope mts and weaver or lyman scope added, was over $200 if i remember correctly. These were new rifles modified by williams, just couldn't figure it,must have been those hard kicking "F"'s!!!!

Where did somebody find that ad? I've gone through and looked at a LOT of Savage ads, never seen that one.

You haven't lived until you've fired a 16" 358 with a metal buttplate and lightweight wood. It snaps you into a keen awareness of being alive. Which is nice. I'm looking forward to a 99 in 450 Bushmaster. It may get a rubber pad.

I found that ad page when I googled old savage 99 advertisements Thought I recognized the worksmanship. One of the graphics that chadb put together long ago. I think that's a picture of his grandfather in the lower right corner. http://chadb.com/Savage/SavageGraphics.htm

I just picked up a well used 99F with a red pad, just like the one in the picture. I am taking it to Tulsa and am going to attach the ad as a hang tag. Rick we will probably see you there.
