Anyone have any experience with this cannon of a turkey gun? I'm fully aware it's overkill.... but there's just something about feeling like your gun is the baddest mofo to ever exist. If anyone has one of these, and would like me to liberate the souls of many thunder chickens with it, please let me know.

I have had several, even had one cut down and had the barrel profiled , also did forcing cone and had screw in choke installed 30 plus years ago. Gave it to a friend of mine and he still use’s it till this day but we hand load for it. We use 21/4 oz nickle plated number 3 shot. Now with the new loads for the 12 and even 20ga I don’t see a need for it but I understand the want for one. The hevi # 5’s 21/4 oz load works great also

Forgot it weighs 71/4 lbs and I installed rifle sights on it. It kicks like a mule. And yes I know what a mule kicks like

I had one, very heavy and my 835 out patterned it so down the road it went.

Saj, that's exactly what I'm looking to do. There is no "need"....but the want is what drives the need. I just think it would be cool to cut the barrel down to 21", get it threaded for screw in chokes, cerakote the metal in dark green, and dip the rest in bottomland. But I appreciate the shot size advice. If i get my hands on one, I'll post my findings.

I've shot them but had no use for the recoil. If I have a need to use a 10 ga I'll stick to my Mag-10.

I highly doubt a single shot 10ga is the "baddest mofo to ever exist". But, have at er. It's your fillings.

I used one 30 years ago when that's all I could afford and got a good deal on one.

I don't know how many rounds I put down the tube, but it wasn't many before the stock started splitting where it met the receiver......it's a fool's game.

If you insist on a 10 gauge and can afford it, look for a Remington SP-10; they can still be found.

I bought my Mag -10 30+ years ago for $450. Three weeks ago I bought a second one for $430. I plan on using the second one as a back up until the first one breaks and then becomes a parts gun. That is the main attraction to the Ithaca- they are pretty inexpensive so picking one up for parts is not too onerous.

my new to me 10 gauge double likes the #5 shot. the extra full side likes the mixed shot load also.

The biggest gain with working on the NEF 10ga is weight savings, like I said mine weighs 71/4 lbs when I was done modifying it . When waiting on a turkey It makes a big difference.

I find the 870 20 ga the perfect weight while waiting on a turkey. I've yet to have a bird not die from it, even at 50 yards.

I have no issue with you having a 10ga. I'm just failing to see the draw of it? That's why they make more than one gauge I guess.

Frankly why bother. Never had a problem with a 12 or a 20 for that matter. But its your shoulder so go for it.

Like I said, if I needed a 10 ga I would use the Mag-10. That doesn't mean I often use a 10 ga, particularly for turkeys.

There are many 12 ga guns that weigh no more than a 10 ga H&R and one would experience a lot less recoil, especially with the gas operated semi-autos. There are even more 20 ga guns in that weight range which would recoil even less. In addition, with 12 and 20 ga guns being so much more common, advances in ammo development will be seen much sooner in these if it even makes it to the 10 ga.

There is nothing wrong using a 10 ga but there are definite negatives one must take into account. I've shot a couple of turkeys with my 10 ga just to say I did but quickly returned to a 12 ga once my curiosity was satisfied. The experiences I had with a 10 ga single shot were not anything I wished to continue, even as a "bullet proof" 20 year old.

In 2001 I watched my uncle smoke a turkey at 60 yards with a Remington 870 2 3/4" with regular 'ol #4 high brass loads. After that I've never needed anything more than a 12. I've shot so many now with a 20ga and #5's that I don't have a big reason to carry my 12 anymore. I do if it's rainy though because it's a Benelli M2 with a synthetic stock. My 870 20ga is wood.
