Just fell into two good deals, both at "pricy" local stores, on a couple of great .22's
1 a Ruger Mark II heavy tapered 6.875" barrel in stainless (just like I wanted) in great shape for $295 - the store set that price after I inquired about it. Around here a clean used blue 22/45 sells for that or more.
2 a Remington 581 that may be unfired for $125 (not a misprint). That's the price the owner had re-tagged it at and he's been in the business for 30 years or more. He knows the values.

So I'm guessing that its a good time to look a little harder/increase your gun store visits - with the buying focus again on controversial guns, some stores may be pricing the other stuff more attractively.

Now maybe I can find someone who wants to move a dusty old Sedgely or G&H '03 in 35 Whelen...

Yes they are. I have a 582 that laughs at the idea that tube mag rifles aren't accurate.
Its really nice to have the magazine version, but I never expected one to land in my lap like that.
That's why I'm wondering if stores don't want to have too much "other" inventory that isn't selling and are looking to make deals.

I fell into a deal like that 5 or 6 years ago, 581 youth model with 3 magazines, 2 used 1 new for $65 @ a yard sale, picked up a Mossberg 51M 2 years ago at a yard sale for $50, owner said he couldn't find 22 ammo.

Right now seems like a good time on most guns that aren’t sniper/long ranged based or military style. I’ve been finding some pretty good deals on some “old school” wood stocked rifles in all calibers. You found excellent deals on the Remington and Ruger - congratulations!!

I got that same pistol in blue a few years ago for cheap. A little worn, but I'll never worry about scratching it up. It's a tank. Bulletproof. A great accurate utility pistol with a competition vibe.

Not as easy to shoot as the 10" I used to have, but the 678 is a fair bit more portable.

About the only model I'd rather have than the target tapered is the hunter model with the 6 7/8" fluted barrel and the fiberoptic sights. But I don't think it's really worth the 4 or 5 times the price I paid.

Is really like to find an "original" 22/45 (different lower than current models) in stainless with the short but heavy tapered barrel.
Seems like a great blend of light, rugged and accurate, and they are not pricey at all. I just haven't run across one.

I looked at a 22/45 Lite with the aluminum shrouded barrel but it looked a bit chunky. If going that way I like the Buckmark Lite, or maybe one of the all plastic pistols like the Mosquito or SR-22.

We've got a couple SR-22s that are hugely fun, and I've got a Smith M&P .22 Compact that is equally a heap of fun to play with. I've probably had a half-dozen of the Ruger .22 autos, and all of them shot better than these first three guns I mentioned, BUT the newer guns are more fun to pack around (it's easy to forget they're on your hip).

As for rifles, I've got a couple of the RARs that are fun, but in no way whatsoever comparable to a good wood/steel .22. I've got scads of them, too. Nothing in my mind beats my CZs, or the older stuff that I had when I was younger, or the stuff I got when Dad passed on. I guess it's because we're older and more nostalgic, but those older guns seem better built and built to LAST a long time. Dad's old Stevens 86D was used when he got it, and he went on to use it HARD, for a lot of years. It still shoots pretty damned well, as well as the sights allow (no scope grooves on the old thing).

Maybe we're being too hard on the new plastic wonderguns, which will never get hunted as hard as our father's guns, but that nostalgia thing runs deep and wide thru me.

best rimfires i have purchased, for the money, have been a 22/45 ruger with the 5.5 bull barrel, and the 10/22 target. the 22/45 is cheap, and it shoots standard velocity and blazers as well or better than my pricey smiths. same with the 10/22 target, and it costs the same as a raved about CZ. guess the downside of the 10/22 targ is the chunky stock, but a CZ aint exactly lithe. i got 10 bricks of CCI SV a couple yrs back for about $250, and recently a 10 pack of blazer bricks for about $250. still working thru it. rimfire life is good

N8dawg6 - I used to swear by CCI SV but I bought into a bunch of Aguila SV a year+ ago and it shoots at least as well for me.
Now I'm torn between them for the best bang for the buck - I paid $25/brick for the Aguila when CCI SV was about twice that locally.
Never expected if to shoot so well, but it does. Its worth a try if you come across it right.

Hey Kragman, I've had the same experience. My son shoots a 581 for 4-H. I swap out my 541 T trigger when he starts shooting. I have a bone stock 582 with a 6 or 7 lb trigger that will out shoot it. I've had him try the 582 but he wants to stick with that 581. maybe if I put the 541 T trigger in the 582...? What I need to do is send the 581 and 582 and 3- 788 triggers to somebody to convert them to adjustable triggers...
