Hi All.

I'm looking for a little info. I came across a Model 88 in .243, not my favorite chambering, but the rifle intrigues me.

From what I can tell it was made in 1957, 5 digit SN 64xxx. The metal was in nice shape and the trigger, which I hear can be pretty gritty, was ok for me.

What puzzles me was teh stock, it appeared to be original but had some gawd awful finish.

What are shooter grade 88's going for these days?

Despite the chambering, I'm tempted because the price was good. How good, that's what I'm trying to find out. Going back today to try it out again and taking a bore light.

$700.00 give or take (depending upon how gawd awful the stock finish is), 243’s bring a little premium....

Wow, They were asking half that. No obvious flaws I could find. Hmm, gonna go look some more at it. Thanks.

Make sure it will actually fire before you buy.. A replacement firing pin can cost half the cost of the rifle...

243's bring a little premium over 308s. I've been seeing some shooter grade 308's in the $400 to $500 range. Stock cracks are pretty common so check close around the upper tang. Does it have recoil pad?

Tell 'em - "no test fire, NO SALE"!

Reason I say this is the FP for an 88 is about as flimsy as anything I've ever seen. They break - rather easily - over time and it's why true replacements can run $250-$300, IF you can find one..

Last one I replaced was probably 8-9 years ago.. I found one for $175. Customer balked a bit, then called me back next day and said to buy it since the only ones HE could find were nearly $300... smile

I don't even accept 88s in the shop any longer..

Yeah! FP in granddaughters 88 broke before deer season last year. I mentioned to son toncheck with newline and see if they had any. ( this one was earlier variation FP). They had em! Guy said that son was third person to call that week looking fot em! LOL! What surprised hell outta me is it was only $98!!! So he got it and I stuck it in. ( found my little bag marked Model 88 slave pins to do it! LOL!)

Worked too! Her first!!

Here’s what Redneck is talkin’ about! Pretty flimsy for sure! This was FP in granddaughters 88. As you see it’s missing about an inch of the right end!

Bob,

Does the Model 100 firing pin look like that, too?
