Fly Fisherman, September 1989.

Sounding more like the Barsness we find in the gun mags.

macrabbit,

You must have quite a collection of old fly fishing magazines.

I also wrote about fly fishing more than a little for Field & Stream and Gray's Sporting Journal. In fact, I eventually wrote more articles for them, because they paid better than Fly Fisherman, and far better than any of the smaller fly fishing magazines. :-)

I do have. I'm bingeing through the stacks before I offload them. Four or so boxes left to go.
I don't think I'll run into any of those other titles.

I'll stop posting if the shouts get loud enough. But I thought you might enjoy (or get embarrassed by) a trip down memory lane, and some on the 'Fire might wish to dig through their own stacks for the issues I cite.

It's fine with me! The only thing that's jumped out so far is how I've semi-forgotten some of my articles published back then--which I guess happens both because of now qualifying for Medicare, and having published around 2000 articles over the past 40 years.

I ran into an article by Mule Deer about hunting the plains in an old Gun Digest, I think 1989, a while back. Thoroughly enjoyed it, as it described the country I hunt in as well. Fun to find treasures like that! If I remember correctly, the same issue had the article by Petzal about selling all his wood stocked rifles to finance the change to synthetic stocks. That one made me sad!

Glad you liked the story! I remember the Petzal article. It sure stirred up a s---storm among the "traditional" custom stockmakers, but I can personally testify that Dave didn't sell all his walnut-stocked rifles. I restocked a Kimber of Oregon .22 for him at least a decade later.

Yep, for many years. Once in a while I still crank out a few, but mostly simple stuff. Don't have as much time anymore for things like tying flies and checkering gunstocks!
