Shot expert with an a2 with standard iron sights out to 300 yards many a year in the army. If I had to be quick and dirty it would be my go to. Try a 16" with a mid length gas system and A2 sights. You may have to dial in some elevation to hit those 300 meter targets but dang they are nice to pack around. Get a light weight barrel verses the heavy or government profile and you will like it eve more. kwg

Hey Scott! And I like optics too, but sometimes irons are plenty, and save about a pound of weight. Starting to like the trijicon RMRs on the glocks so far, not heavy enough to matter on an AR15 so a few of ours may eventually have them too.

BTW I should add, the target was prone iron, at 600 yards, and whatever the torso length military target is called, I thought D but maybe a different letter about head down to where both legs start basically.

RMRs are not heavy, but what I like about the irons is they have a good 600 yard or 800 yard elevation drum. The one AR I do have optics on is a 16-ouncer, but it's also 5X and has an 800 yard reticle.

That is very true on elevation, something I didn't even factor into, but as noted I have yet to try one on an AR. So might not work out right. But then again most of my AR stuff would be 300 yards or so...and for that its easy to hold over 9 inches as needed max.

Worked it with irons then holo then 1-6 at 100 yds. Day after tomorrow is 200 yards, then I will go to 300. Be interesting to see how much holdover I need.

I just built me a "dissipator" copy. Midlength gas system though under the forearm with the front a2 site being used strictly for sight purposes. Colt carry handle, its a sharp looking setup. Nice to have a gun I don't have to worry about expensive mounts/optics for...just go shoot.

I have one for teaching the kids how to use A2 sights. They're very effective and accurate but if I was a Korean trying to defend my liquor store, I'd probably prefer an optic.
