Like others out there, I get ocassional offers from Micro Soft to update my Explorer software.
Some months ago, I went from either 5.5, or 5.0 to 6.0.
Everything worked a little better, and I was assured I had no problems. Then, while surfing, I ran into some kind of problem. I got an error message, and was asked if I wanted to tell MS about it. From then on, I could go no where. Later I discovered I couldn't even tell MS about it. My e-mail worked fine. I just couldn't go to my usual web sites.
I consulted my computer expert-trouble shooter. My little brother. He built my machine. He said I needed to unload 6.0, and reload either 5.0 or 5.5. But, he said I needed to get that version from somebody, etc.
I was going to do that. But, before I did, I used the help menu to read up on Explorer. I found that if unloaded 6.0, the orginal 5.0 version would be reloaded in it's place automatically. I did that. l still get error messages. The computer locksat times. I have to cut the power to the hard drive and restart. I can't just reboot, or shut down using the Start Menu.
I think I'll try finding a 5.5 version of Explorer over at the MS site, and see if that will help.
Ayway, I hope nobody has my problems. BTW, Norton is installed, I get perodic updates, and I have done a virus scan over this. Norton says all is well. Hmmm. E

I installed IE 6 a month or so ago,and I'm about ready to toss this thing thru the window.I don't know if thats whats causing the problems, but I'v been getting illegal op error messages, and lockups just about everytime I'm on it. My computer stand by only works some of the time, other times it shuts me down, as if I'd shut the power off, and runs scandisc.I'v defragged, scanned, file checked,re-installed IE and Netscape, only other I can think of to do is run my backup and start over.Wonder if theres any patches for it?

You should check for viruses. I have version 6 and have now problems. A couple of months ago I had this viruns and it was a real pain. It made my machine unusable for a month and I finally got rid of it with norton anti-viros after installing the OS on a brand new hard drive.

I have Norton up and running. And I did do a virus check at that time. I also defragged, etc. So far, nothing works. I have had a couple of updates since my last virus scan. I will do another and report any findings.
I can at least use my crippled version of IE 5.0. BTW, I'm running Win 98, if that matters. E

I run ME and IE 6 on my 350 Pentium II and have very little problems.
However I do go to the Microsoft windows site click on windows update once a week and download and install all the patches.
With all I hear about this system it should not run but continues to do so.
Some of the time problems may be traced back to installation of other programs overwriting the latest files with out of date ones.
If I continually run into problems on these installations Format the drive after backing up the data.
Then do a complete fresh install don't forget to run the windows update downloads, should solve all problems.

I did the same thing a couple weeks ago, including a "critical package" update.

After several miserable failures I did the "DISABLE NORTON" deal before trying to download and everything downloaded satisfactorily.

In the past I've even had to UNINSTALL and later REINSTALL Norton to get good downloads.

FWIW!!!! A lot of MSFT "Experts" openly badmouth Norton. Others say it's great.

I think I would disable Norton and see if the problem with IE 6.0 still exists. I have been running IE 6 since it came out and the only problem I encountered were when Norton was running. I stopped using Norton over two years ago and my box has been running very well ever since.
A little common sense and some subtle changes to your operating system and most computers can be safe from most viruses without resorting to a resource hog like Norton.

I am by no means any kind of computer expert.

I had ME on my computer with McAfee. Got ticked at McAfee when they came out with an new piece of software and would not let me update DAT files without buying the new software, even though I was still within the first year of purchasing the original.

It seems to me, and I have heard from people that know much more than I, that ME is a very unstable operating system. My PC kept getting slower and slower and locked up frequently.

So, I bit the bullet and went to Amazon.com and bought XP Professional. I also bought Norton Systemworks. After installing both all I can say is WOW! What a difference. PC now runs at the speed it should, have not had it lock up once, and Norton is a great piece of software when fully utilized.

I wonder if Expl. 6 needs to run on a more robust operating system???

I have less than $200.00 in these upgrades and couldn't be happier.

FWIW, remember, I am no expert <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

E,
Start with the programs that are loaded up at start up, disable them one at a time and use the machine like you normally would until you find the one that is giving you trouble. I'm bettin IE6.0 isn't the problem. Its another program that runs in the background. I would start with Norton. I bet this helps, let me know!

Hmm, never had any problems with IE. The error you are getting exists in many "debug" builds of Microsoft products. It will tell you that the application has run into a problem and needs to shut down. It will ask if you want to forward to Microsoft (which will be promptly be trashed).

Do to installing and uninstalling programs, operating systems can eventually become somewhat flaky. I always keep my computer backed up well enough that I can just format the hard drive and reload the operating system quckly.

Since I am a software architect, I pretty much have to rebuild the machine for each project I start.

E, always shut down everything operating in the back ground when installing an update, especially Norton. When installing an update or patch, always send it to a seperate file, then install it from there once you checked it with Norton, shut down all running programs, and the internet. That way if you have a problem, and have to re-work things you still have the down load saved. Sounds like Norton kept all of I.E from loading. Shut Norton down completely, reload 6, and after its working fully, Restart Norton taking a new snapshot. You might also want to check your Security and Advanced settings in I.E.. They might have also been inadvertantly changed.

Emericus:

You didn't state your computers characteristics and capacities in your original post. All I saw was that you were running Windows 98.

Windows XP has been out for a year.

If a computer lacks adequate memory, the memory becomed clogged and the computer will stall. Closing windows or rebooting will free up memory.

You should also go into your system and set up the appropriate memories by clicking on prompts. You may need additional memory chips.

If you are on the Internet and do a lot of surfing, a huge amount of space is taken by the stored pages that you have already seen as evidenced by going backwards using the back arrow.

I also frequently got the messages that you mentioned. It does occur.

Further the later versions of Microsoft 6.0 may be overwhelming your computer, particularly if you have an older computer with slower clock speeds.

You may want to take inventory of all aspects of your present comuter and compare to todays softwares. Current software obsoletes computers in a couple of years. It is so voluminous that the old ones simply cannot cope with the requirements. You will find that you cannot update spreadsheet, word processing, accounting software, etc., because you old computer can't handle the current OS requirements. I bought software and found I couldn't use it. It laid aroung a year until I bought a new computer and installed it.

It may be time for the old girl to go to pasture. You can buy new computers today with tons of hard disk space, very high mega hertz speeds, big memories, CD players/ burners and audio with speakers for under $500. *( Hewlett Packard hp pavilion XL918 and Dell ).

Makes a great birthday and Christmas gift *( whenever someone asks what you want ).

Thanks for the thought Bill. My computer never gets close to the storage capacity it has. I do check it. It is a custom made unit by little brother, who has a EE degree and has worked in the field all his life. He was well aware of my habits when he built it for me. He has offered to upgrade the operating system, but I have not bothered. Maybe I should. E

Eremicus,Friday nite after thinking about it and fighting this thing a little more,I called Earthlink thinking maybe their new program was causing problems. The tech suggested I download and run this program(Wash and Go, in downloads, link below). Its generally used to clean up your hard drives to enable it to run faster, deleting garbage, double files, files with errors, etc. It worked, have'nt had any error/illegal op messages, problems shutting down, lockups, etc, since. This things running like new!Just make sure the option is checked,to store everything it removes for 2 weeks,"just in case".Read a review on it and it has'nt fried a computer yet.Its free to try, could'nt hurt.

I would do the following:

First choice: Reinstall your OS

1) Install as an upgrade on top of your old drive.

2) This should preserve your old data, config files etc.

3) Check to see if explorer works.

Second Chioce - Switch to a New disk

1) Purchase a new hard drive. You should be able to get a 30 gb drive for about $30.

2) Install your operating system on the new drive.

3) Configure your computer to boot off of the new drive.

4) Explorer version 6 should work now.

5) Gradually install your applications on the new drive and copy other stuff from your old drive to the new one.

6) Your old drive will serve as backup and provide info on you existiing settings.

6) When everything you want to keep is on you new driver and you are happy you can delete everything on your old drive and use it to backup your new drive and for overflow.

Hey E,

Sorry to hear that you've got computer problems. I'd like to be of assistance, but I'm working down in Silly Valley during the week now, and I'm also taking off for China on Friday.

This may sound outlandish, but let me know if you'd be willing to kiss Windows goodbye forever. I've got my mom ( the least technically competant individual I know) running Linux. If she can use it, anyone can.

No more blue screens, no more virus worries. Say goodbye to IE/Norton/Outhouse - er Outlook problems. Complete and utter control over your box. A free, high quality office suite if you want, etc...

I'll give you a ring tomorrow night,
Scott
