I shoot a lot of paper plates.
I've had dot recticles put in all my scopes. I just draw an X on the plate and put the dot on the X. They also work good in the rain. Just use a laundry marker for your X. VB

I prefer poachers/trespassers but the trick is to only come close. Actual hits make for some difficult explaining. It makes for some spectacular moves and leaps going back across the fence.......it helps their form if you fire one just before they get to the fence line........

Unfortunately or fortunately, depending on your POV, when the word gets around that you'll kill them, even if not true, it slows down target practice substantially. 6 or 8 rounds of .308 have done more to improve the quality of my deer herd than years of management practices.

vb,

Paper plates work for me. I keep a magic marker in my shooting kit for making "X"s on makeshift targets--cardboard boxes are a favorite.

CAT I thought I was the only heathen that did that
Works so much better if they never see you too. I turned one fellow who was slipping into my duck marsh into a human motor boat. He was throwing a two foot bow wake getting out after wadeing in.

Boggy:

That image brought a grin to my face......

Word on the street up here is, "Don't cross that fence, that crazy old SOB will SHOOT you!"

I had one, using his truck as a blind, legally, on the other side of the fence line....shot out of thecab through the back sliding window and apparently thought he had killed a deer in my pasture(never did find the deer, looked for several hours)....he walked down the road on the other property's side of the fence about a hundred yards and coolly hopped over into my pasture. He was about 600 yards from me, I took off running and closed to about 400 before he either saw me coming like a mad Santa or heard me cussing. He was about a 100 yards into my pasture and he lit out for his truck.....I fired once in the air and he caught another gear, about when he got to the fence I fired off one more round and he cleared it like a gazelle. I scored him a 9.6 on style. Haven't ever seen that truck again.....

Sitka deer, too funny. Unfortunately I can testify to the fact that Sitka is 100% correct, 100 yards isn't far enough. But, man oh man, do those lids ever fly high!

At the range I belong to they have these small turkeys and pigs and stuff. I set them up at 100 yards and blast away with my 22 rimfire. Takes a bit to zero in but you can hit them about 20 times before they tip over. I can set them up closer but that is no fun...

I like gallon milk jugs with water, clay pigeons and my favorite. The orange dot at $198 a thousand.

Whatever you are willing to put up with, is exactly what you will have.

PAYPAL, sucks and I will never use them again. I recommend you do the same.

I've done the water jugs, the paper plates, the clay pigeons--also my Grandpa gets some pretty big boxes from the construction sights he works on. We trace around my brother and practice drills on that. It is esp fun cause it is so politically incorrect to shoot at anything resembling a human...

We have also wanted to shoot the little propane tanks. Not sure how far back to stand though.

And the idea with the tire sounds cool. Might have to try that.

Batteries pollute with lead, cadmium, sulfuric acid and Lord knows what else. Don't do it - Dispose of properly. Sitka Deer's paint cans weren't too hot either- but funny! Me, I'm falling back on hunting camp motto: "Don't admit to nuthin'"

I like bowling pins for my pistols but rifles tear them up too fast. The range I belong to has steel gongs set up at 100, 200 and 300 yds for rifle shooters.

In the late 80's and early 90's, I used to shoot those little cans of freon that you could buy at Kmart and such. Much fun! ... one good hit and a big white cloud appears from the condesation of moisture in the air!! But they are now illegal ... heck, I'm probably personally responsible for a good chunk of the hole in the ozone layer over the south pole! But a lot of fun though!! ... If we have any members here from Austraila ... oops ... sorry about that

With a rifle, I like to shoot at any kind of container filled with water.

My cousin showed me a great wat to burn up a lot of ammo with a 22 pistol this weekend. Went down to the river and shot at leaves and small sticks floating down river. Challenging and a lot of fun. Once I got used to shooting at moving targets with a pistol I could hit them pretty regular. A solid hit usually causes a stick or leaf to fly 4 or 5 feet out of the water.

I've not done it, but I'm told that a 5gal bucket of used cooking oil shot with a tracer is much fun and has a nice visual!!!! I like jugs of water, pop cans, and steel. I've done the spray paint can thing too, but it is messy. Water ballons are fun and cheap.

Avagadro:

It wasn't too bad, about the same as you low 20s but dry. That is the big difference with cows, if they can stay dry and the ground is not completely covered in snow they do pretty well. Anthing less than that gets tough on them in a hurry.

Since so many of my doe killers crapped out, or only killed one.....ahem......I have had to shoot several here in the late season. Got one today and one a couple of days ago. Sausage here I come.......

Pumpkins are my favorite, BUT you have to cut a little hole in the top and fill them with water to get them to do anything. Oh boy, but when you do hit one with water in it.....RUN!!!!!!! I had a 50lb. pumpkin last year set up at the range. It took 3 gallons of water to fill it. There were three mexicans there that were wondering what I was doing. I kept telling them that it was going to rain pumpkin and they coudn't understand me. I figured "what the heck" and set up the 7mm mag loaded with 140 grain ballistic tips at over 3,200 fps. I was only 50 yards away from the charging pumpkin. I aimed for the bottom half of the pumpkin and lit it up!! It rained pumpkin parts and goo all over those poor mexicans for about 5 seconds. They were grinning from ear to ear as they wiped off seeds and slime. My wife and I had to change our underwear. Funnies damn thing I have ever saw. Of course, we got plenty of goo as well, but we expected it, they didn't Flinch

I have tried many but my favorites (for handguns) include full soda cans, golf balls tossed into the air (takes me a while to hit one, but always seems worth it) and watermelons on an elevated stand shot with something suitably high powered which give meaning to "halo of red"...dvnv

Well i shoot at paper mostly i do the bowling pin thing i get about 200 of them a yr and distribute them out to the clubs and anybody that wants them.Another thing for me is take the beer or pop can and toss in a creek of moving water to give me something a little different

you can get all the bowling pins you want from your local bowling ally they have to replace pins every year and most are more then happy to give them to you just to get rid of them

hey las,
can i take that to mean that you pick up all your bullets and fragments after a day at the range? don't want that lead getting into the groundwater.
p.s.
i bet it takes a long time to get around AK on a bicycle.
