Thank you! That's my golden boy. I have coached him since he was three years old and he absolutely loves baseball. This is our first year with kid pitch and he's had some questionable calls, but he doesn't let the umpire dictate how his game will be played, be focuses on playing catch with the catcher and throws hard four seamers.

Good shots! Glad the lens worked! The first hurdle shot was with that lens and the second was a Canon 100-400mm L. I can't tell much difference but my skills are pretty basic

I use the 70-200 2.8 and shoot through the fence. Just rest my fingers on the edges so I don't scratch the lens but still get close enough to have it disappear.....

I love that focal length. Portraits, sports, ect...that is a well rounded focal length for sure.

There are two lenses that I have with me all the time.
24-70mm F/2.8
70-200mm F/2.8

Currently saving for;
14-24mm F/2.8
50mm

Finally, the crew of boys in my bullpen I dubbed the "The Hurt Squad!"
[Linked Image]

I have never worked more closely with any of the boys until this year. These four had all of my spare time dedicated to pitching and they were a constant force on the mound upsetting batter after batter. I couldn't be prouder of their accoplishments and with the Summer season coming hot, we are really amped up about the new team sponsor and uniforms.

Rings? For a championship? No, that is very common practice now days.

Back in the day, they distributed trophies with granite bases and plastic statues, but now rings are very common. My son hasn't taken his off since receiving it.

The ones that he has from other tournaments were much smaller. I'll see if I can't take a pic of them tonight.

Thanks! Same to you!

That young man in the background just singed a letter of intent with Gonzaga for baseball....His fastball tops 93mph. Great bunch of kids playing for this traveling team.

Here are a few of my son a couple years back. He was a 3 year starter on the offensive line on a team that won back to back 3A Virginia State Titles. My son is #77, left guard.

I used to do this as a side business. Paid for all the travel for both kids as they got looks from college coaches. Both were recruited.

These are a mix of sports and just a few samples of hundreds. I charged $100 for a 16x20 photo. It took about 30 min to put them together each.

The photos in the thread show acumen in managing exposure but, the framing and DoF management are areas that could take the shooter to the next level. In the industry the question is "what's the most important part of the photo?" Its the background. Clean up the background through angles or DoF , pay attention to the story telling, two persons and a ball.

Rented a Canon 70-200L IS f4 for today's meet. Just wanted to try it out as I have always read really good review about how sharp it is and this meet allows for spectators to be pretty close, so 200 mm is plenty. I shot the last meet at this course with a 18-135 USM

So, after shooting the meet with the 70-200L f4, I am not sure that I can tell much difference between that and my own 70-300 USM II. Now, in my hands, it may certainly be user limited. I will say that the 70-200 is a great lens to use. Fast focus, nice weight and balance. All internal focusing. I plan to review the photos some more, side by side. The constant f4 was nice as late afternoon approached, did not need to crank the ISO to maintain a fast shutter speed

A few random thoughts. The most important part of a sports pic? The background. "two faces and a ball" , story telling.
The last cross country pic is the best of the bunch.

Here's a few that are done quite differently. First two are shot with strobes. The bball one is big strong light in the rafters and the wrestling is a small one screwed onto the side of the scoring stand. The Bball blocker is Colt Lyerla, He probably would have played pro football but, he got into drugs or something and blew his ride at U of O, he was unstoppable on the court in highschool basketball, he had several blocks in this game. This was the last year for the old arena and they opened the new House that Nike built the next year, it was also the end of being able to set your own strobes at U of O. If you know wrestling you'll enjoy this one. The nice thing was is the ref was just high enough to be lit and the strobe found it's way to the faces and the shoulders absolutely leveled on the mat.

[Linked Image]

[Linked Image]

The next is Branin Cooks who was really showing he was destined to go pro, he just tore that ball away from the hapless CU corner. I covered a lot of Beavers football and the next was the one time recently they were seeming pretty good until they got upset by UW at Century link field. It actually was going ok until one of their receivers got knocked cold and it was downhill from there. Impact doesn't show well in stills but, you can tell he really gets hit here.

I like the last as this young man was playing in front of many from his hometown and pasted this ball right out of the park and as he ran the baseline you could see the delight in his eyes.
